Builder or surveyor? - for assessing cracks

Since the cold snowy weather, cracks have appeared where the walls join the ceilings - in the 'garden room' off our living room.

Not sure if I need this assessed by a builder or a surveyor, as I'm not sure if it's just due to ordinary movement in foundations, when weather was wet - or is a sign of subsidence.

Anyone any idea which professional I need to assess this?

You want my dh a structural engineer.

But first of all contact your insurance company. They will organise to send one out to assess your cracks and see whether or not they are caused by subsidence.

We've had some cracks and had to get a structural engineer's report for a re-mortgage (it was the mortgage surveyor that spotted the problem). The insurance company couldn't do anything unless there was a proven cause - and most of the possible causes (like a leaking drain) were exempt anyway.

It sounds like truss uplift to me (no expert though!) We had it in our old house and it was nothing to worry about.

Agree a structural engineer is what you need - we had cracks open up in our rear extension and when the engineer came around he said that when it was built it hadn't been tied in to the party wall properly - easy to fix and he identified the problem quickly. He did say though that if the cracks were less than 2mm they didn't advise doing anything so maybe check the size and observe to see if they get any bigger?

Thanks v much for all the advice. Sounds like I need a structural engineer and to infomr the insurance co. too.
