If it is already tenanted can't they ask tenants? Landlord has to pay for any interim periods between tenancies so really he is the one who needs to ask.

oh and with water I think it is still regional wide so you don't have a choice of supplier.

when the tenants move out they will call up suppleir and either give your name or the landlords.

Just make sure you take a note of the meter numbers with who ever is checking you in, and when the companies get in touch (which they will via a bill!) you can contact them with your name and meter reading and any amount owed prior to your moving in to be sent to landlord/letting agent.

If he isn't helpful then if you get the meter number which is written on the electricity meter itself ring whoever you want to be with and register with them. They can then do the legwork, there may be a small period where you are with the current supplier but your chosen supplier can find this out for you. I used to work for npower.

Keep a copy of the meter readings somewhere safe like an address book or diary as sometimes there can be problems when a property has been empty for some time and they have estimated readings.

And I don't understand this assumption that if you are on benefits you somehow squander money and don't pay rent! I used to debt collect and most of the people worked and didn't pay

Also, water is regional you don't get a choice so just google for the waterboard. I live in Yorkshire so we have Yorkshire Water.

If it is metered try to find the meter so you can take a reading, try under the sink or small grid outside your property usually in front of the house somewhere, path/drive/pavement!

odd the landlord doesn't know then. He ought to be receiving bills for utilities, water and council tax while it is unoccupied. When you move in make sure all the meters are read (take dated photos too) and that he gets sent a final bill otherwise you may end up paying for a period you are not responsible for or ,worse, be cut off. National Grid may be able to track down the current electricity provider.

We had this here. You can ring the local supplier (Uswitch have a list with numbers) and ask to move to them, and they will tell you the previous supplier. You then ring the previous supplier and give them meter readings.
