I've got a hankering to live in Lewes - can anyone tell me what it's like?

Hi there,

We live in Brighton at the moment, but I think I really like Lewes. My dh though says he's not dead yet and doesn't want to live there!

What's it really like? What are the people like. I think that there are a younger, lentil weavery crowd,(although I'm neither really!) but dh thinks its all posh ladies in sensible shoes.

Can we get a 5/6 bedroom house in Lewes? and what would it cost?

Would it be easy to move and get several state school places? or are the schools as oversubscribed as in brighton?

We have visited Lewes a few times, and i really like the feel of it, want to live somewhere smaller and less seedy than Brighton, but be able to visit Brighton easily (and so the dcs can visit Brighton when they are older).
Thanks!

Pollyanna I'll be joining you when ds is older!I love Lewes I think everything seems so accessible and the town is friendly and lots of nice houses! When we moved here in 98 lewes was much more expensive and we couldn't afford it now its cheaper for much nicer houses!have you ruled out London then?Hope to see you soon x

dh and the family have ruled out london! (and also the school situation has ruled it out too really!).

And the Brighton school situation is one of the reasons I am looking at Lewes now.

I think you should move there at the same time as me, and we can become eccentric types who breakfast in Bills alot

It's a lovely town. Not sure about schools though - I know some friends who moved there a few years ago had to send their DS2 private for a few terms while waiting for a place to come up in the state school their DS1 was in.

My bil lives there with his family, and it seems like a lovely place to live. Lots of community spirit and things going on.
I'd quite like to move there myself, but DH is pretty much of the same attitude as your bloke

Property prices are very much on the high side (another obstacle for us!)

It's shite for pushing buggies, lots of tiny steep crap pavements.

Their babies are still babies, so I've no idea regarding school places.
