I wrote a poem for v close family on a scroll and hot waxed it, for more distant rels I wrote a standard poem that I found in a book which went down really well.

We also found a website where you can order the sweets you like (we had Rolo's) and you design the outer layer, so upon closer instpection they had your names, date of wedding etc, these were really unusual and good for a budget.

Almonds wrapped in net/lace, tied with bows, or is that too naff?

We made gingerbread men and women with stained glass window hearts - cut out a heart shape in the middle, break a red boiled sweet into it, and bake as usual. they were in a basket as people came into the hall, and were eaten with champagne (well, cava, but you get the drift).

Friends brought really cheap wine glasses, and wrote our names on and the date, they were used as seating markers and we still have them.

Are you having a DIY themed wedding? Are we talking a tester pot of paint with an appropriate name or a paintbrush with your initials on it? Or just something you can make yourself?

Plus is the effort really worth it? Ask people who've been to weddings if they remember what the favours were and if they kept them. The majority probably won't remember. I know the tradition but these days you rarely get given that as a favour - it's yet another one of those things that the wedding industry likes to persuade you is a "must have" and that yours has to be unique.

If you want to do something, I'd stick a bowl of pick and mix in the middle of each table. Messing around with favours is a pretty pointless expense and use of your time imo

My sister had miniature tubes of Love Hearts. It was several years ago, but I still remember being made to lovingly wrapping each one and putting fancy ribbons on the end. They did go down well.

Habbibu · 26/01/2010 21:39

Oh, we did bowls of pick n mix too - I'd forgotten. It went down v well.

A friend of mine did lottery tickets for everyone, it was really funny. Nobody won a large amount of cash or anything but it was a good idea we thought, she had rolled each one up and tied it with a ribbon so it looked like a scroll. Understand that might not be everyone's cup of tea though!
