Downstairs room houses electricity and gas meters - can it be used as a bedroom?

I have tried looking on google but can't find anything. We have a room downstairs that used to be (before we bought the house) accessed from outside but now the door is blocked off and you access it from inside, like a normal room. Up in the corner in a cupboard it has the electricity and gas meters (and the supply pipe?) and directly above is the boiler (i.e in the kitchen above). I am sure it can be cupboarded safely but is it legal and/or safe to use this room as a bedroom? Thanks

I work for a university's accommodation department and we have plenty of houses on our books where the meters are in bedrooms. If you box it in make sure that you can still access the emergency cut-off switches and there is plenty of access for meter changes.

Ooo, does the gas come into the accomodation around these meters? (unsure if some meters are just meters or are always next to the big pipe) That's really helpful, thankyou so much! Desperatly need the bedroom

Anything before the meter (pipe wise) belongs to the local gas company (even if you change supplier the equipment belongs to them) and the meter also belongs to them, then anything after that is yours and your responsibility.

It would be perfectly fine, the only thing I would advise is to have a carbon monoxide detector in there, but then I would advise anyone to have one whether there is a meter in a bedroom or outside on the wall. If there is gas to a property, get a detector.

Box it in but make sure you can still get to it because every 2 years or so the gas and electricity company like to do a visual check that everything looks ok.

Yes, definatly going to have CM detector in there. I was just worried about a leak - is that the only place with actualy gas? Unsure where the gas stops and turns to heat and stuff (presume it goes the boiler and that does the business?). Looking good so far

The gas goes to the boiler where is set alight and heats water. Also gas may go to your cooker if you have a gas cooker/hobs. You may have gas pipes to your kitchen even if you don't have a gas cooker.

Get a CO detector and if you are still worried, get someone on the Gas Safe Register (used to be Corgi) to give a gas safety certificate on your property. They will be able to reassure you that everything is fine with your meter and gas appliances.
