Would you buy your ideal house in a lovely road if there was a student house next door?It is a residential street in a non student area and is the only house there let to students. It is a huge beautiful house in a great area for amenities and is refurbished to a standard we could never achieve ourselves plus the local schools are the best in the whole area.I am the first person to view it and I know it will go but am concerned about noise. It is currently let to 3 boys.Apart from that it is our dream house in every way and we can afford it!

yes, students may not be there forever and even if you moved next door to an old couple they might move

soothsayer · 20/01/2010 15:38

Bumping as need to decide as they have 7 viewings between now and Friday afternoon!

Not all students are noisy. I live in a student house, most nights we are tucked up in bed by 10.30-11pm and we have never had a house party. In fact, we get annoyed about our neighbours being a bit noisy and they are a normal family.

Go for it.

peacocks · 20/01/2010 15:46

Find out more about the landlord. Is it permanently a "student house"?

Fizzylemonade · 20/01/2010 15:55

Not if always a student house, my best mate lives next to one.

They are very lucrative properties as they rent per room so it is unlikely that it will change. They are usually listed with the accommodation officer at the uni/college so always get filled.

They are noisy, come and go at all hours, throw parties etc. I have been one myself and we were in a semi but luckily the other side was also a student house. Much fun and hilarity but not if you weren't a student!

soothsayer · 20/01/2010 16:08

It is permanently a student house for at least 4-5 years then the landlord will live there himself. He has an agreement with the college Agent seems unconcerned as it is a very popular road but this is to be a final move for us as dc will go to the schools for at least 11 years.

Not all students are noisy.

Students who are living out of a student area have often found themselves somewhere in a nicer area because they prefer not to have the noise of studenty areas.

If they are noisy at unreasonable times then you can complain through offical channels. Most universities want and need to keep locals on side so will issue warnings to their students.

I would personally because I think that if it is the perfect house, right schools etc then it is worth it. Plus, the students living there will change from year to year so not like being stuck next to the neighbour form hell for ever and ever.

"It is a huge beautiful house in a great area for amenities and is refurbished to a standard we could never achieve ourselves plus the local schools are the best in the whole area"

forget about the students, you will regret it if you don't get it. Imagine you end up getting more mdest house, and your elderly neighbour is a bit deaf and keeps the TV on at full volume all day... How would you feel? go for it!

noddyholder · 20/01/2010 16:27

You will have long periods in the holidays when they aren't there too A month at christmas and the whole summer.Maybe go round at the weekend and have a look then when they may be in full swing

Mongolia · 20/01/2010 16:29

Check aso if they are postgrad students, they tend to be way more quiet than undergraduates.

hf128219 · 20/01/2010 16:31

Not quite the same thing but - I used to own a flat in Edinburgh that I used to rent out.

The Professional people who let it - wrecked it.

The Students who let it - left it immaculate. They even left some nice wine in the fridge.

you just can't judge a book by its cover.

So go for it!

FuriousGeorge · 20/01/2010 16:41

Personally,I wouldn't.Years ago,the house next door but one to us was rented by students and our walls used to vibrate from the sound of their music. If you think it is the house for you though,it may be worth contacting the uni housing dept to ask what their policy is on students who do cause a nuisance. Some are very hot on neighbourly relations.

lalalonglegs · 20/01/2010 16:52

How big is it? If it is let as five separate rooms or more (and reception rooms are usually bedrooms in student houses) it will liable to HMO licensing. If the students create a nuisance the local authority has the power to rescind the licence.

Ask the current owners (in writing) how they find the neighbours.

upahill · 20/01/2010 17:00

I wouldn't but I don't want to live near anyone at all at the moment. No reason except I'm feeling moody and anti social at the moment. That hasn't helped has it! Sorry
Better get off mumsnet before I get even more grumpier (grin)

SparklyGothKat · 20/01/2010 17:01

We have students opposite us and next door. When they come into the house we have about a month of parties, noise etc, but once you complain to the uni and the uni have them into talk about their conduct, they shut up and its lovely again

MrsToffeeCrisp · 20/01/2010 17:02

Is it actually attached to the house with the students?

IIRC correctly we were quite respectable neighbours when we were at university - am quite sure my house is noisier now with three DC in it!

fluffles · 20/01/2010 17:08

if it's only a house for three occupants and only for the next 4-5 yrs then i'd go for it.

chances are you'll get maybe one noisy lot in that time... depends how stressed a few months of noise would make you.

we own in a building with some student flats - small ones, two or three students per flat - a couple of lots have been a bit noisy at the beginning of the year and right at the end after exams but ok the rest of the time (and gone all summer, christmas and easter) and we've only actually had to tell them to shut up two or three times in the three years we've been there.

moomoomalarky · 20/01/2010 20:20

Agree that is quite likely to be noisy at the start of the year and the end but could be ok inbetween. My Mum lives next door to a student house and we used to be both students ourselves and live next to students so this was usually the case in my experience!

Depends on how much noise worries you and also whether the house is being maintained properly.

alypaly · 21/01/2010 12:46

each batch of students can be very different and they tend not to bother with the gardens unless the landlord has a team helping them with maintenance.

So i guess one year could be good the next could be horrendous

alypaly · 21/01/2010 12:48

might be worth finding out who the landlord/lady is and seeing if it will always be student accomodation
