And what do you call that kind of skirting board which goes on top of your kitchen worktop?

you know, like a little edging which goes round, and just finishes it off?

Spashback??

almostreal · 19/01/2010 21:26

Its called an upstand.

IsItMeOr · 19/01/2010 21:26

Splashback was what I was thinking too Pinkle

NonVinaigretteRien · 19/01/2010 21:26

I'm thinking just something a couple of inches high, maybe in the same stuff as the worktop.

A splash back is what goes on the wall behind hob and sometimes extends to the walls but is your talking about the continuation of the work surface up the wall a little it's an upstand.
At least I hope so currently in the mist of planning a new kitchen, never knew there was so many bits and pieces!

paisleyleaf · 19/01/2010 21:30

Sorry, beading.

almostreal · 19/01/2010 21:31

Oops meant :but if it at the end of the first line.

IsItMeOr · 19/01/2010 21:32

Ooh cross-posted with almostreal. Now dithering that maybe it is an upstand when it's small...

HerHonesty · 19/01/2010 21:32

upstand but i have seen it called plinth.

IsItMeOr · 19/01/2010 21:47

Isn't plinth the bit that goes at the bottom of the cupboards, so you can't see the feet?

almostreal · 19/01/2010 22:04

Yes occasionally some companies call an upstand a plinth but it's becoming more common to be known as an upstand.

almostreal · 19/01/2010 22:04

Sorry that didn't make much sense the bottom bit that covers up the feet of the floor cupboards are called plinths.

ThatVikRinA22 · 19/01/2010 22:06

its an upstand. i have one. and im ripping the fucking thing out and tiling very veyr soon! neither use nor ornament.

IsItMeOr · 19/01/2010 22:06

I am so glad this isn't my kitchen we're helping to design here . (sorry OP!)

almostreal · 19/01/2010 22:09

Ah don't say that Vicar, what's the problem with them?
Must admit I like the look of them but if they are a pita I might not bother.
God I'm never refitting a kitchen ever again it's a bloody nightmare!

IsItMeOr · 19/01/2010 22:20

I have an upstand on a granite work surface and it looks great. Does need dusting occasionally.

NonVinaigretteRien · 19/01/2010 22:25

I am planning on tiled splashback along the long wall where the cooker will be. And where the main work area will be.

And then upstand aroudn the rest of the kitchen, where we'd only make tea and ocffee and stuff.

Would that work?

ThatVikRinA22 · 19/01/2010 22:29

almo - the really are neither use nor ornament im afraid as ive found.

they dont stand UP enough to protect the wall from splashes. they dont really do anything much tbh. im replacing my worktops and im going to get some lovely black tiles to match the new worktop, my old kitchen was tiled and looked far nicer and was so easy to clean.

with the upstands im forever repainting the walls above them - your walls will get dirty really quickly - you cant help it - splashes from water, cooking etc and the wall is marked. id really not recommend them.

NonVinaigretteRien · 19/01/2010 22:31

Yes, I think they're only really a trim to finish it off. They don't do a proper job.

OP posts:
almostreal · 19/01/2010 22:42

Thanks Vicar thats makes a lot of sense don't think I can be bothered to keep repainting. So tiles it is then, seems so much more practical.

IsItMeOr · 20/01/2010 07:17

We have dulux washable tough matt on our kitchen walls, and they do wipe down for the occasional splashes. We have a proper splashback behind the cooker.
