Carpet vs Laminate for upstairs landing, help please?

We had a leaky pipe last week, and as a result our floor in the bathroom, separate toilet, and landing all had to be torn up in varying degrees to find the source.

Everything was in laminate when we moved in, and it seemed a bit wrong to me to have laminate flooring in areas that get wet, so I've asked the insurance company if I can have vinyl for the bathroom/toilet and they've agreed.

Now I have to decide if to let them re-do the laminate on the landing, or take the settlement money and get carpeting. The carpeting on the stairs leading up to the landing badly needs replacing, and I think it would look nicer to have the carpet continue on to the landing. Two of the bedrooms have laminate, one has carpet (but don't want to replace until we can afford to do other stuff to that bedroom).

So....carpet or laminate for the landing? WWYD and why?

i would do carpet, esp if the stairs are carpeted too!
laminate can make it very noisy when peopole are walking around upstairs, so ou may also find carpet cuts down on noise.

carpet. Laminate sounds a bit lethal to me tbh (but I am a clumsy cow who often falls down the stairs)

I like carpet upstairs. Cosier.

I would also go for carpet upstairs.

Don't like the thought of laminate on an upstairs landing, I have visions of slipping whilst wearing socks only and hurtling down the stairs.

GOML - glad it's not just me... we have to replace the carpet on our stairs - it's so worn I keep falling on my arse.

Skiddy kids will go flying on it..(not to mention dogs)

I guess it's a no-brainer really. I am also clumsy and have already fallen down the stairs, so having laminate at the top makes it more likely I'll do it again. And the noise of the laminate is already making it hard to sneak quietly out of 4.5 mo DS's bedroom as he's falling asleep.

Thanks ladies, now on to source some carpet that is hard wearing, stain resistant, not too ugly and can be paid for on a budget of £155. Hope it can be done!
