Thoughts on Life Cover

Got to find a new policy as have recently got married, small child and moving house. Mortgage just in my name as main breadwinner, DH will be unemployed as a result of move (my job is relocating) and unsure when he will be working again.

My job is as safe as it is possible to be in this climate so redundancy cover isn't hugely important. I've seen so much in the press about policies not paying out anyway that they seem a bit pointless.

Not sure how much cover I should be thinking of looking at and whether the cover should include DH too. Whole thing is a bit of a mystery to me so all advice gratefully received.

As you are the main income, your life cover should be enough to pay off the mortgage, and then enough to pay the normal bills for 3-5 years imo. Remember that you may have a death in service payment from your work too - check this out.

For your DH, you might want to cover him to pay the mortagage off, plus some extra - think of all the extra costs you might incur if he died like child care

Do you have critical illness cover through work or privately ? Really important to know that if you were unable to work you'd still be able to pay the bills

We have cover through work if I was unable to work and death in service benefits although they aren't hugely generous.
