Should we go for the cheaper, more practical option or the luuuurvely one?!

We're going to buy a sofa for the new kitchen/dining/family room. We can't decide between the sensible option with washable, replaceable option or this the lush but far less practical option

Of course removable covers would be ideal if there are spills etc but then I could be quite strict about no drinks/food on the sofa. I don't know. Please give me your opinions! Thanks

Family room = children with food. It seems mean to have a comfy sofa in a family/dining room if you aren't going to let them use it (and they will want to use it with snacks/drinks). Go cheaper/practical - you can always buy a beautiful throw which only comes out for your benefit when they have gone to bed.

In a kitchen/dining/family room, I honestly think you need to go for the practical one. I'm sure the kids will take food and drinks on the sofa while you're not looking, and it would be very tough on you and your DH if you couldn't sit down on the sofa in your own kitchen / family room with a glass of red wine in your hand.

grt a leather one

saying 'no food' when the sofa is in the kitchien will be v hard imo and you will knacker the lovely Habitat one in no time

noddyholder · 09/01/2010 14:23

Habitat Life is too short not to love it!

FatGirlThin · 09/01/2010 15:39

LOL! Noddy you are the dissenting voice. Of course I want to buy the habitat one but what you lot are saying is exactly what my head is saying
Mrs B - we aren't leather people although I know it is an ultra sensible option. Too slidey

Do children really trash them that much?I have always had nice furniture and apart from the odd spill its fine

HerHonesty · 09/01/2010 15:55

practical. i am thinking about the same thing now and have thought we would live with cheap sofa for next 5 years, trash it, and then buy the lush one. will save you worrying about it too. also imho habitat rarely that good quality, so in 5 years it really will be trashed.

FatGirlThin · 09/01/2010 16:09

DC don't deliberately trash stuff (colouring on sofas etc) but dd is very clumsy. I think we may have to go for the cheaper option
I may buy cashmere cushions to satisfy my unpractical side

I agree with HerHonesty re Habitat btw - overpriced for the quality you get. If you wanted to spend circa £2,000 on a sofa I would say go to sofa workshop. We have an 11 year old knole sofa from there which is still in beautiful condition (fabric is a bit dated though, very late 1990s now so later this year will get it reupholstered).

HerHonesty · 09/01/2010 16:25

cashmere socks. pure luxury but utter waste of money as they wear through in a matter of weeks. and i never did look quite like the model in the white company catalogue. funny that.

I dont think kids trash stuff, its more accelerated wear and tear.

noddyholder · 09/01/2010 17:14

I had a navy cord habitat sofa for years and it was great quality when I eventually sold it it looked and felt new but that was late 90s.

HerHonesty · 09/01/2010 17:15

meant to say "or cashmere socks" ...

FatGirlThin · 09/01/2010 17:45

SSSSSHhhhh Noddy. I've made up my mind
