Broken Boiler it's freezing any ideas?

Right we've had some trouble with the boiler in that the temp gauge was on it's way out and wouldn't heat the water until our plumber turned the stoptap right down so the water comes out quite slowly

We were going to get this fixed in Feb as we literally have no money until then

Anyway this morning the "lockout" light on the boiler is flashing and it won't fire up, it says on the front to press the red button if this happens which does make the boiler fire uo but then it just goes out again

Has anyone any ideas I'm hoping that it's something obv that I haven't done, we've just no money to get it fixed and there are inches of snow on the ground

poor you, I have no idea about boilers, but we have the british gas homecare insurance thingy, it costs us £9 a month and you get a yearly service and any repair costs £50 flat rate.
sorry I can't be of more use but that was all I could think of. Would you be able to find/borrow £50??
really hope you can sort it.

If you go to a forum called ForumTowers (I think it's www.forumtowers.com) and leave a message for a poster called Melboy telling him the make and model of your boiler, and descriptions of what's going wrong, I expect he will help you - he's a boiler man, and very helpful on the Internet!

thanks everyone it's fixed!!

a friend suggested that the pipes outside could be frozen so I went out and poored some warm water on the overflow pipe and it working again!

I've just had this with mine, bleeping drip pipe was frozen solid. Managed to clear most of it but still one bit frozen that I can't reach. Will have to wait for dp to come home. Have disconected the pipe inside and left it dripping into a bucket in the meantime. Oh the joys of a nice snowy winter

jooseyfruit · 09/01/2010 11:33

yay! glad it's fixed!

GrendelsMum · 09/01/2010 13:56

Oh, that's handy to know!

GrendelsMum...I took a peak at that forum. It looks very grown up!

You need to insulate overflow pipes outside or they will freeze. Leave an opening for the water obviously. This is the problem with new fangled and so-called better condensing boilers isn't it. British Gas is the thing. We have a contract with them for just our boiler and they have always been fast and efficient. We pay about 14 a month but we don't pay at all when they come to fix it. Rooms not heating up? Have you bled your radiators with a key? do it every autumn.
