So, moving on Friday - what should NOT get packed?

The title says it all, really. We've treated ourselves to a full packing service, and they're coming tomorrow to box everything up (except beds/anything we reserve) and we move on Friday.

We have a 5 year old and a 2 year old. So far I've put aside:
binbags
two changes of clothes each
nappies & wipes
plate, knife, fork and spoon each
washing up liquid
a couple of towels...

Am planning takeaway/pub lunch/sandwiches for a couple of days until unpacked.

our PC ended up with a massive dent in it and refused to work after it was 'packed'

Loo roll (learnt that one through experience! - but be nice and leave some for your buyers too!) and a few lightbulbs, just in case. And make sure bedding, PJs etc are either left out or at least well labelled and accessible.

A few toys for them to play with while you unpack the rest?

MortaIWombat · 06/01/2010 20:09

Thanks!

If you are leaving the cooker and have a removable grill pan handle, make sure it doesn't go with you to the new house.

(Have one that's moved with us 3 times now! )

Onlyaphase · 06/01/2010 20:18

Scissors or something to open the boxes with (also bitter voice of experience). In fact, put a pair of scissors at the bottom of yourhandbag now, just to be on the safe side

List of utility providers etc for your new house and old house, plus account numbers and anything else you might need for this

CMOTdibbler · 06/01/2010 20:25

I'd add another couple of changes of clothes because playing hunt the socks after you move is never fun

School uniform for your 5 year old if needed

Mugs and cups

Sleeping bags and travel cot (sometimes its all delayed and you get in the house late, so being able to just bed down for the night with no hassle is great)

All your documents

The thing to remember with a packing service is that they go through like locusts, so anything there will be swept up in their path - so put things you don't want to go in a car, just to be on the safe side

MortaIWombat · 06/01/2010 21:10

Scissors is a cunning one...

Good idea about stuff in the car too, though I'd worry round here that it'd promptly get broken into if obviously full of belongings.

Thanks again. Off to hunt down best bottle opener/corkscrew.

your shoes - the packers will pack everything you leave out...if you take your shoes off at the door be very careful!

Yellow pages in case it all goes pear shaped and you need services of some sort.

Again, the bitter voice of experience.

MortaIWombat · 08/01/2010 00:02

Oh god too late now. All packed up. Locusts is about right. Broadband due to be disconnected tomorrow and not reinstated at new place for at least a couple of weeks , so getting my last MN fix.

Thanks for all the help and good vibes!

nightwear and toothbrushes. Years ago we moved and found the people hadn't even started moving out of the house that by then belonged to us. Had no choice but to spend the night with parents and whilst my mother kindly gave me something to sleep in, I don't really suit brocade nightdresses
Good luck!

Hurrah for new dongle! Back online already.

Good advice all, and let me add curtains, for small children kept awake by streetlights.
