coloured skirting boards?

Thinking of redecorating our lounge natural hessian which we have in the hall and is lovely. Thing is, our white gloss painted skirting boards and door frames etc are in white gloss and I think now looks a bit dated and too much going on in a small space - was wondering about using colour in a tone similar to the walls and in a less glossy paint. Any suggestions? Has anyone tried this?

I have painted the skirtings, door and door frame in my kitchen the same colour as my walls - but they are a very pale grey so depending on the light it's not always obvious that they aren't white, iyswim... But I think natural hessian is not too dark either so it would probably look ok - you can always repaint them white if you don't like it! What colour is the door?

On the other hand, I have a colour similar to natural hessian in my living room and white skirtings look ok with it

I think white skirtings would look OK, but I would definitely ditch the gloss - go for an eggshell.

We had all of our wood work painted in Aged White (Crown) in our old house, it looked great as it wasn't so stark as Brilliant White paint, but not so different for it to look odd. I think consistency throughout the house is quite important, I would choose a colour that I'd be happy to take throughout the house for all of the woodwork.

Yes, do it, we did it this year and it is fab!

We have 'soft stone' walls and woodwork. We used satin wood on the skirting boards etc.

It is much easier to clear and dust doesn't show so much - win/win!!!

allthatglisters · 02/01/2010 19:18

Thanks everyone. Decorhate - your pale grey sounds nice - can you remember what it was?

Saltyseadog - thanks for reminding me about the rest of the house as I always forget about this. Unfortunately most of the rest of the house is white gloss!

Saggyhairyarse - your soft stone walls also sound nice. Have now got 4 patches on walls from test pots! Looking for a neutral colour but classy - don't want it looking anything like magnolia, and cream is a bit dull. The test pots I've tried are too mauve on the wallls. It it getting expensive in test pots!

OP - you don't need to do it all at once .

Good luck with choosing. I saw in a mag today the F&B colour Cornforth White - beautiful soft grey. I'm a bit anti F&B (think it's overpriced for what it is), but the colour was gorgeous.

LynetteScavo · 02/01/2010 22:11

Don't do it!

Wood work MUST be white. Egg shell, probably, but definately white.

When I'm priminister I shall make it law.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 02/01/2010 22:13

I am sceptical.

Coloured skirting board sounds a bit 70s bedsit for my liking.

Got nice pictures / links?

hippipotamiHasLost77lbs · 02/01/2010 22:14

Am with Lynette. I have an aversion to painted woodwork - they must be white! Not gloss though, eggshell is nice.
Ditto ceilings - can't abide coloured ceilings...
Sorry.

(although the doesn't-show-dust-argument is a good one, could almost convince me)

saltyseadog · 02/01/2010 22:18

Surely an off white is allowed?!

hippipotamiHasLost77lbs · 02/01/2010 22:21

Mmm, I tried off-white once. It just looked like the white paint work had yellowed. Didn't work for me.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 02/01/2010 22:22

I like an off white, yes.

mozette · 02/01/2010 22:28

Agree with Lynette woodwork should be white - preferably eggshell. Ceiling should also be white

LynetteScavo · 02/01/2010 23:31

hippi...don't get me started on coloured ceilings!

lechatnoir · 03/01/2010 00:12

another vote for white woodwork & ceilings (do people seriously paint ceilings anything else ?) and deffo ditch the gloss.

So, different views then! I got the idea from some of the rooms shown in the Crown colours leaflet - I like the way it gives a simpler, less fussy look. Also in a way it looks more traditional - I'm not sure woodwork has always been painted white?

Lynette - you made me laugh - have you had bad experiences of painted woodwork?

white woodwork is very old fashioned same neutral colour as walls is the way to go!

saggyhairyarse · 03/01/2010 18:34

If you go to the Crown site there are some examples there.

DecorHate · 04/01/2010 09:45

The colour I used OP is Grey Steel 3 from the Dulux mixing service at Homebase. It is a very pale grey and it took a while to find a grey that wasn't purply looking on my walls.

I have a colour similar to the Natural Hessian in two rooms (think it is called Bleached Lichen - also from the Dulux mixing system). It looks great in the darker, east facing room so i decided to use it in the other room but in this brighter room it looks a bit magnolia-ish in bright daylight...

MummyTumble · 04/01/2010 09:47

Ditch the gloss and get Dulux Satinwood

GleeE4 · 04/01/2010 09:48
