recommendations for off-white paint needed

We're buying a house which is a bit lacking in the low ceiling and big windows I had always foreseen for myself, and which is currently decorated a fetching shade of peach. So I think we need light and airy throughout - thinking off-white but preferably more grey tones than cream. Any suggestions? I'm normally a bit of a Farrow & Ball ponce and was thinking of their Strong White but would really welcome suggestions. Oh, and am I right going for grey tones, or might that look a bit cold?

If anyone has read this far, and can also think of a lovely soft grey or mauvey (but not too pink) for the bedroom that will look stylish and not showhome-feature-wall-y, that would also be great.

Thank you, oh style-aware Mumsnetters.

Ok I'm a F&B Ponce too but I can really recommend Timeless by Crown for a lovely off white. For a nice grey try Cornforth White by F&B, we have it in our bedroom and it's lovely.

Oh THANK you kitsmummy - I had just decided this was the most boring MN thread ever and nobody would bother replying

I'll be off to Homebase in the morning for my Timeless tester pot...

I Timelessed my hall and stairs. It is nice but no-one ever comments on it. And that rankles. Know what I mean? I would use something a little more....more, next time.

navyeyelasH · 30/12/2009 14:49

Another vote for timeless - there is also another good off white by living etc but can't remember the name.

HugeBaublesWhatDidISayRoy · 30/12/2009 15:00

we are timeless people here too! Dulux. Have it everywhere. easy to wipe. but if you have small dc it is shit for the stairs because you are forever cleaning off the paw prints where they walk down holding the wall

hester · 30/12/2009 20:45

I picked up my timeless sample today. Haven't tested it yet but it looks a bit magnolia. Is it? And, HugeBaubles, are you saying any light colour is shit for stairs, or that Timeless is hard to clean?

No, it's really not magnolia, I hate magnolia, it's off white, a v light cream, but not yellowy.

saltyseadog · 30/12/2009 22:39

Another one to try is Aged White by Crown. It's in the Period Range so is similar to F&B in terms of it's light reflecting properties (waits to be told that it's not by a F&B purist ).

SazzlesOnASled · 30/12/2009 22:42

I have Linen White from Dulux. I think it is from their Heritage range. I went for their ultra tough paint (can't remember the name ) but it is brilliant for wiping off all kinds of toddler mayhem

SazzlesOnASled · 30/12/2009 22:42

Ooh, just as i posted i remembered it was their Diamond Matt

hester · 30/12/2009 23:34

Thanks so much, everyone. I spent a small fortune on paint samples in Homebase today, and can see I'll be back tomorrow for Aged White and Linen White

You can all come round for tea when my off-white palace is finished.

hester - i think most whites are shit for stairs really. The timeless is easy to clean but every week or so it needs a good wipe down. But i don't know what other colour is good for stairs really.

Timeless is nothing like magnolia believe me. It looks really quite white unless you then put a stripe of brilliant white next to it you can see the difference but deffo has no yellowy tinge like mag does.

Jacaqueen · 31/12/2009 09:28

Another one for you to try is Antique White by B&Q. DH said it is the best paint he has ever used in terms of easy coverage and getting a good finish.

noddyholder · 31/12/2009 09:35

B and q rice cake is lovely.Everyone assumes its F&B as I always use that but it goes on really well and covers ANYTHING!I also have Dulux dusted moss 2 which is a really warm grey if thats possible

Toots · 31/12/2009 09:49

Crown Sail White I like. Slightly stoney grey looks lovely with white cornice/ceiling.

hester · 31/12/2009 22:44

Wow, so many good recommendations. Thanks so much, everyone.

HugeBaubles, maybe I'll just insist that dc wear white gloves at all times? I'm sure that will work.

I second Antique White by B&Q. We use the matt version and it is lovely. It really suits our victorian semi and is a lovely warm white. Cosy. Love it
It also 'goes on' really well and covers well.

saltyseadog · 02/01/2010 19:35

HAve you chosen one hester ?

hester · 03/01/2010 22:32

Still getting in all my testers, salty! I swear, I could almost paint the entire house just with testers at the rate I'm going... Will report back to the off-white jury

So how did it go with your white OP? Which did you get and were you happy with it? I know it was a while ago.
I'm asking as about to paint a flat with low ceilings and lots of windows and a bit overwhelmed by the amount of whites that are available..
