What can I do with an unwanted but quite new water tank?

Had ours replaced a couple of years ago. Now we're having our loft converted we've got to get another new one - different shape/size etc so the existing one is to be ditched.

Do people use second hand water tanks or is it the kind of thing you have to buy new? Am wondering if a builder/plumber/DIY enthusiast would be likely to give me a few quid for it. If not I guess freecycle? Someone mentioned something about copper being bought for scrap - and said as it's copper-lined that might apply. Anyone know anything about this?

We sold ours on gumtree. Definitely try advertising it. Make sure you put all the technical details in the ad.

that's good news - thanks, Sofia.

How did you decide on pricing? In fact, if you don't mind me asking, what did you get for it?

The scrap copper is worth something but not much. I am fairly sure if you give it to someone on Freecycle they will just take it down the scrap yard for a few quid. You may as well do the same yourself.

Otherwise try and sell it as a tank for reuse. Have a look at this plumbing supply website down the bottom of the page the new price seems to be £175 - £300. I think you might be able to sell at 50% of new price.

That's really helpful - thanks BetaDad

just don't leave it in the front garden like we did - it will be gone by morning

sherby · 29/12/2009 20:19

DH (plumber) said it might be worth something as scrap, take it down the merchants and see

but he also said that if it had been worth much the builder would've taken it

HerHonesty · 29/12/2009 20:22

ebay or gumtree. someone will take it.

somethinganything · 29/12/2009 20:50

sherby actually builder was going to take it, we just queried what he'd be doing with it and that's why I got on here really.

Gumtree it is then - thanks, all

We have bought a couple of old ones in the past to make some way out fish pond filter - good luck

Check and see what other ones are being sold for. But agree with betadad...50% of what they are selling for new is a good start. You can go down from there. It's free to advertise on gumtree, so be patient.

Thanks, both
