replacing missing Victorian spindles

So, does anyone know how I can do this, please? No local joiners are willing to take out one and copy it, as far as I can tell.
Wickes, Travis Perkins and B&Q/Homebase don't have any the same.

Do I just get used to living with three missing staircase spindles, or is there some magic cure I haven't thought of? I'm in SE London, if anyone knows someone here who can help!

Unless they are particularly intricate or unique I would be tempted to get the nearest thing and bung it in.

That will draw less attention than gaps.

And also, staircases and landings are thoroughfares its not like you would be sitting there looking at it.

There are a few places that will take one and copy it - we did this but in the end we got 5 discontinued onesplus the old ones from our neighbours.

try shawstairs.com, excelstairs.co.uk or search locally for bespoke stairs / spindles. but you would need to take one out - lot of work - and pay about £40 for the first one.

excelstairs had more victorian designs like square ones.

There will be joiners who will do this - where are you located?

If you phone up your local Conservation Officer at the council, they may well have a list of specialist conservation joiners that they can let you have.

MortaIWombat · 23/12/2009 13:01

Thank you both!
Adopting a combination of approaches, I think excelstairs has something almost the same. If it is the right height, we'll get a handful of theirs.

Hmmm, true. Lewisham Council not known for its conservation, though.

Oops, sorry - see you're in London. I know a guy in Cambridgeshire, but that may be rather far.

GrendelsMum · 23/12/2009 13:21

But if they aren't actually the same, it might be rather conspicuous?

Lewisham do have a Conservation Officer - their phone number is apparently 020 8314 8533. Tell them that someone from another LA said that their conservation officer had been very helpful in this situation

How about trying good local carpenters?
Am sure someone would be willing to take one out and get more made up, I have found joinery companies are not always too great but a jobbing carpenter may be willing to help out.
If you took one out you could try then try and match it at reclaim yards? Lassco/Solopark etc?

SPAB may be able to advise...

Hello - did you have any joy with this as I am in exactly the same position. I was quote £300 for one spindle by a jobbing carpenter.....

Geneticsbunny · 28/01/2019 16:44

There is a company you can post one to and they will copy it and post them back. We did it about ten years ago in our previous house. Try googling it

Evennow · 28/01/2019 17:06

Try Googling ‘reclamation/architectural salvage’. They may have a box of oddments & you may be lucky.

goldpendant · 28/01/2019 20:10

Google the stairguys- they will do it from a photo with tape measure for scale..... very reasonable (about £10 per spindle but there is a minimum order - good to have some spare!)

newyeardelurker · 28/01/2019 20:34

For se London try R Dunns on bexleyheath Broadway / crook log, they have a huge range of spindles and I'm sure can make to order. Rdunns.co.uk
