We've just moved and I'm tackling the utility room. Trouble is I've not had this much space before and I want to get it right. What would you have to make life easier?

A servant.

Preferably male, good looking, topless.....

Katymac · 13/12/2009 14:42

2 sinks
Washing machine dryer
Storage for dirty clothes, clothes & ironed clothes and un-ironed clothes
Storage for tools, cleaning chemicals, room for a few gardening bits etc

ideally it should have an outside door and storage for coats/shoes etc & possibly a shower (esp if you have a dog)

Good luck

Katymac · 13/12/2009 14:43

& extra freezers too

& storage for the spare china/cooking equipment you only use at Christmas

BlakeFielderCybil · 13/12/2009 14:45

i have one of these

filled with 6 of these

so when I'm emptying the tumble dryer I fold, and shove in each persons personal drawer.

it has changed my life

Modestlyglazed · 13/12/2009 15:02

Yes, the futility room.
Definitely a washing machine.
An ironing board.
And a big old mountain with a boulder.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 13/12/2009 15:06

lol, sisyphus

almostreal · 13/12/2009 15:15

An old fashioned pulley to hang up clothes in the winter months or when wet.
Space for washing machine and dryer, maybe space for an extra fridge or freezer depending on your family size and lifestyle.
Work-top to put your washing baskets on etc.
Space to set up Ironing board.
Large sink, under sink cupboard to store cleaning stuff.
Muddy area for when the kids come in muddy.

BlakeFielderCybil · 13/12/2009 15:26

old fashioned pulley- check

newpup · 13/12/2009 15:36

In my mine I have, lots of storage cupboards, sink, washing machine and tumble dryer.

Also a dog bed and a door to the garden.

It is a fab space to iron in and love that I can shut the noisy washing machine out.

Very handy this time of year when the dog is always wet and smelly!

WilfSell · 13/12/2009 15:36

oooh yes, I want a pulley. In my dreams I'd also have a laundry chute coming straight down from upstairs!

Deffo another sink. Storage for things that need to be kept out of the way (cleaning fluids etc)

Don't forget, if you have a drier, they are quite light and you can build a frame and stack it above the washing machine if you need to...

Built-in/pull out ironing board. Or somewhere to store an ironing board (so few houses have this) and a place for other odd storage (brushes, mops, vacuum cleaner)

Pannacotta · 13/12/2009 15:37

Storage for vacuum cleaner and mop, ironing board and iron if there's room, plus a radio to keep whoever is ironing company!

Pannacotta · 13/12/2009 15:39

Oh yes worktop is essential, for putting down wash basket, folding clothes, putting stain remover on laundry, cleaning shoes etc etc.
Agree that an airer pulley is really useful and love the IKEA links from Blake.
If you have an IKEA catalogue do have a nosey as the Swedes are the masters of utility rooms...

EdgarAleNPie · 13/12/2009 15:45

i would have a long south-facing window so all i had to do was hang the clothes on hangers (and knickers on one of those round peggy things) in front of it and wait for them to dry in the sunlight, drip dryin onto the tile floor... nice and straight.

it's how they do it in Taiwan, doncha know..

my parents futility room is full of bike parts. the futility section of my kitchen has a playpen (where baby sleeps) and dogs bed & bowls, plus our growing collection of wellingtons & mud...how different dreams are to reality....

Spacehoppa · 13/12/2009 15:45

Heath Robinson! Sorry I will do a sensible post now...

EdgarAleNPie · 13/12/2009 15:47

peggy thing

EdgarAleNPie · 13/12/2009 15:49

round peggy thing

ILikeLentils · 18/12/2009 13:50

I would like a roof that didn't leak!

thelunar66 · 18/12/2009 13:56

See, I don't get all you lot wanting to iron in your futility rooms.

I can only iron in lounge/sitting room, with glass of chilled wine to hand and a HUMONGOUS telly loaded up with pre-recorded tv series or films!

Off to iron to the whole series of Collision now

CarrotForKing · 18/12/2009 19:17

Blake I am in awe. Now have put that rack thingy to top of futility room list
Where did those of you with pulley things get them?

sylar · 18/12/2009 19:21
