How has everyone decorated their sitting rooms? I need inspiration.

Room is fairly high ceilinged, with large square bay window so good natural light. Has original floorboards and general 1920s features, picture rail etc.

Thinking of wallpapering wall by chimney breast in something bold and Zoffany-esque, but is this practice now a bit passe / 'daytime TV makeover'?

I think you need to do what makes you feel relaxed and comfy. Forget what's 'in' atm as it doesn't always coincide with what represents you. Following trends could cost alot and just make you feel uncomfortable when you're in there.

Why don't you have a look here for some inspiration. Go woth what you like not whats in fashion.

I have painted my living room mainly 'light coffee' and my feature wall is meant to be a chocolaty brown colour, but some how ended up a light mauve colour, which works really well. We have oak effect laminate, beige curtains and a beige sofa.

It's all quite plain, but we were aware when we were decorating that this isn't our 'forever' house. So we needed to make it sellable for the future.

this wallpaper is beautiful, very subtle and elegant. You could do the room in a base of minks then add silver and fuschia as accents. I still love the paper either side of chimney breast look!

Also browse the designers guild website for inspiration.

I really like plain paint in living rooms and then you can jazz it up with a funky footstool, cushions or a armchair.

The paint colours at Paint and Paper Library are superb in my opinion. I am not a fan of wallpaper and do think the one wall in paper look is a bit passe and you might get bored of it easily?

Cole & Son do lovely papers but I think doing the whole room looks much more classy than just one wall.
I'd decide first what youa re doing re window dressings, will you have blinds/curtains?
I think a large mirror above the fireplace and a huge rug could work well in a room with tall ceiling.

I always choose curtain fabrics first and then choose paint colours/wallpaper next as its easier that way round.

I did my main room recently - it is all rather mushroom but I then got the most beautiful fabric and had 4 cushions made. They have a large embroidered orchid on them in white, fushia and lime green, I had them backed in a dark purple velvet which I also used to cover 2 armchairs. The room is, in essence, very plain but these 4 beautiful (and expensive!!) cushions make it look really special.
