How to make this room cosy - any ideas?

We have just moved house and DS (nearly 2) now has a MUCH bigger room than before. He used to have the boxroom, so it only just fitted his cotbed and some drawers - but now he has a much bigger space, and also it has a wall of built-in cupboards/wardrobes, so even the drawers aren't really needed and have been passed on ready for DC2! All he has in there right now is his cotbed, a few toys (but we want to keep most of his play stuff downstairs) and a chair, and it is quite empty and echoey.

What would you suggest to make it more fun and cosy, and less echoey, without spending too much money or filling it up with unnecessary furniture? I think we might try to find some sort of cheap mini-sofa or similar, so we can sit next to him for stories (he is starting to want to sit on his own rather than on knees, but we only have a single chair in there now), but I can't think of many other ideas! Thank you.

A rug helps muffle echoes and makes the place feel more cosy.
Photos, pictures, books, mirrors?

I think that msrisotto's ideas are nice. The mini-sofa sounds like a good idea in the short-term, but would be quickly outgrown. Why not keep the single chair, and looking to the future (sleepovers, overnight guests etc), perhaps get a chairbed. This would give years of use, and could be used alongside the existing chair for stories and the like. Nice heavy, lined curtains also cut down on the empty, echo-y ness.

To make it less echoey you could make / buy some mobiles to hang from the ceiling. That breaks the sound up and makes it less echoey. Also heavy curtains, soft furnishing help.

pictures on walls, nice curtains, book shelf?, i agree that a nice rug and beanbags would be good and also the chairbed rather than the mini sofa.

Wow lots of replies, thank you all! I especially like the floor cushions and beanbags idea, would be a good way to soften it up without spending too much! I am planning to get some curtains up too (there's just a blind at the moment), and yes some pictures or maybe a wall hanging would help too. Also good point about the chairbed and possible sleepovers in future. I'll start looking around!

Avoid pushing furniture up against the walls.
