what could i do with the area above cooker?

Was thinking of continuing the granite slightly up the wall for a few cms/inches all the way round and getting rid of tiles altogether.

Where the cooker is do you continue the granite all the way up to act as a splash back or is that a ridiculous idea .

And if not what else could I use as a splashback?

Thank you !!!! Planning a kitchen makeover without replacing the units - going to paint those in farrow and ball x

watching with interest....im thinking of doing this too!

I think it might look bit OTT to have the granite as a splashback... I would probably go for a glass or stainless steel splashback, depending on the style of the kitchen & appliances. If you go for glass you can get coloured glass or paint behind it or just have clear glass so the wall colour shows through...

wifeofdoom · 03/12/2009 22:01

Can use stainless steel - ebay sell them...

kizzie · 03/12/2009 23:15

Thanks - i think you're right about the granite being OTT.

Will have a look at the glass option - thanks hadnt thought of that. Or maybe just go for the stainless steel. Or even maybe some 'statement' tiles just in that bit - rather through rest of kitchen.

Bit nervous about painting the units. But I did some wardrobes earlier in the year and with (a lot) of prep they were a bit of a triumph . They are really good condition - just dont like the colour/finish - so a waste of money to rip them out.

Quite excited now ! x

I don't think granite splash back would be ott. I wish I'd done the wall lip thing as now I think tile may be the best option. What you can do is have a glass splash back with a funky pattern behind it or coloured glass. John Lewis do a good range.

if you're using granite at all make sure your cupboards can handle the weight.

ditto the wall if you're doing a granite backsplash.

throckenholt · 09/12/2009 13:58

we have granite tiles as a splashback behind the cooker (with an oak work top) - it works well.

BigusBumus · 09/12/2009 14:06

I have black granite worktops with small upstands and no tiles. Behind the hob i've got glass. I used an eBay seller - I just sent him my required dimensions and chose a colour off the dulux colour charts and gave him the number. He painted the back of the glass with the colour and my granite installers glued the splashback into place for me when they did the worktops! It cost me £69 and looks amazing. I chose the kind of greeny clour that recycled glass goes, but i wish now i had gone for a purple!

This isn't the seller, (can't find him now)but it's the same thing...

I have granite worktops with a s/steel splashback behind the cooker which is easy to clean. I'm a lazy sod and couldn't be bothered to clean the glass ones every time I cook (they seem to show the marks more than s/steel).

Doodlez · 09/12/2009 14:23

My brother continued the granite up the back of the cooker wall - looked like a grave stone. We kneel and pray for a decent meal in front of it now

BigusBumus · 09/12/2009 14:26

I disagree mumblechum (sorry). Having had both glass and s/steel, I think that stainless steel is much harder to get streak free and shiny all over. Because glass is shinier and more reflective in the first place, it doesn't show up marks as much!

mumblechum · 09/12/2009 14:28

Oh Ok. I love your name btw BB, wish I'd thought of it!

Doodlez · 09/12/2009 14:28

Stainless steel - wipe over with WD40 - comes up perfect, every time.

HugeBaublesWhatDidISayRoy · 09/12/2009 14:30

doodlez - hilarious post

BigusBumus · 09/12/2009 14:32

Mumblechum, I just saw someones name that was "StiffUpperHip" which i just had the same lust after. I do indeed have a very stiff upper hip what with a toddler sitting on it all day. I want that name!

Sorry, off topic

back to splashbacks......

jo1958 · 09/12/2009 14:45

I've got black granite worktops with 4" upstands all round plus a granite spalshback behind the cooker: naturally I don't think its OTT! The granite is easy to keep clean so long as you dont mind polishing it (I use cheap microfibre cloths from Aldi). I HATE the stainless steel cooker hood which is a pig to keep clean. By the way, remember that granite doesn't bend so we had to have a very bendy wall in our 30s house replastered for the upstands.
