Artex celings to be skimmed: IS it the messiest job ever?

Just bought a 10 year old house with Artex ceilings throughout. A bloke is coming over tonight to quote for re skimming the lot but he said the quote would depend on HOW much covering up is needed (as in 'prep'), even asking if we planned on replacing carpets?!

Is the mess caused by 'sanding down' the existing Artex or by plaster dust in the making up of the skim?

when we had ours done they sanded the artex a bit flatter which was dusty, then plastered...that wasn't

Yes, I didn't think making the plaster would be messy inside as surely they do that outside? Or it comes ready mixed? I guess the sanding is the biggie!

just reread your op...had our rooms upstairs done, it was dusty and there were a few plaster blobs but they put dustsheets down and after a few hoovers (the dust settles over a couple of weeks) it was fine.

they mixed the plaster in the garage

maybe they thought they wouldn't have to put sheets down at all if you were changing the carpets?

Yes, the bloke asked how much protection we'd need!
