Depends how close to the centre you need to be here

Annner · 30/11/2009 21:01

Highcliffe is 15 minutes walk from the centre, has a bus (albeit only a half hourly service) and an Ofsted Grade 2 fabby Primary school. A lot of it is Council/ ex Council, but there are a lot of Victorian properties there as well, in about your price bracket.

Think in terms of Gordon Avenue, St Catherine's Road, Canute Road, Highcliffe Road and Cathedral View.

We've been here since 2003 and love it. None of the hysterical London exiles that flock to pay gerzillions in Hyde/Fulflood, etc.

It's often marketed as East Winchester/ East of City as t'was rather rough a generation ago.

I've just been looking at property in winchester but looking for 4-bed. I think if you look in the outer areas like badger farm and oliver's battery and weeke and highcliffe you should find something.

We are currently renting in hyde and hoping to buy one day but it's very pricey... Made friends here now tho and dc's are all at local nursery, done ds1's school application etc so can't face leaving hyde!

Might be worth looking in kings worthy and abbotts barton areas too.

Annner · 30/11/2009 21:58

Egg, don't believe the hype about Hyde. Your DCs will have a jolly good education in a school other then the two most favoured in the city centre. And you will get a lot more house for your money and still be able to trot into town.

Less chance of everyone wearing the same Boden coat, though.

lurkingdad · 30/11/2009 22:34

I think Highcliffe got a bit better quality about Feb '84 when I moved out

I think if you want value for money and only a short walk to town then Abbotts Barton and Highcliffe are probably the best bet, Weeke and Harestock look OK but we discounted them because it's such a long walk to town. No idea on the prices since I stopped looking after we moved in and good manners stops me saying what 3 beds cost 7 years ago. To my mind the 1970's houses have a bit more space and can be a bit better value. They may not be so pretty on the outside as an Edwardian in Hyde but half the price. (He says from his 1970's house in Abbotts Barton)

Annner · 30/11/2009 22:39

Yup. In 2003 Our 3 bedroom + loft conversion Victorian in Highcliffe was literally half the price of a very similar house in Hyde.

And still is.

Both Abbot's Barton and Highcliffe are close to the city centre, 'tho AB is better if you aren't that good with hills.

Lurking Dad - was it really rough? A lot of people have talked about its past in hushed tones as though it was the Bronx. But it is in Winchester, and from what I have seen here, it's a really nice place to live. Let's face it; Winchester's definition of rough compared with London doesn't compare.

In our Neighbourhood Watch newsletter, one of the thefts recorded was a pair of gardening gloves from a shed. And that was all.

lurkingdad · 30/11/2009 23:11

I'm not sure how rough it really was as I was just 10 when we moved out. But certainly it was not the best of places and there were certainly some characters about. I could tell some amusing stories about how the social niceties I had learned at All Saints did not go down so well when we moved to Alresford.

That said you are right, rough in Winchester is probably not the same as rough in London or even Southampton. We moved back to Winchester from Basingstoke and certainly the rough end of Basingstoke is much rougher than anything Winchester can offer.

jennifersofia · 01/12/2009 21:44

Thanks so much everyone - this is all very useful! We went there today and had a little look (somewhat randomly) around the centre and also Fulflood. We both felt quite attracted to Winchester itself - it looked lovely!

Big question is, could I find a space in a school for my Y3 and Y5 dc?

Ahhh trouble is Annner I already live in Hyde so am very attached to it. I know if we had been living in Fulflood for example I would be attached to that now, but would really not want to leave here now .

I do own a nice Boden coat though !!!

Jennifersofia, we spent two weekends here before we decided to move here (rented an apartment in Park Road for a couple of nights each time).

Not sure about school places for your DCs, I presume the only way is to phone the potential schools in advance (have no experience here mind you!).

Lots of luck to you!

Hi all

Sorry to resurrect/hijack this thread but wanted to talk to some of you 'East city' people!!! I was brought up in Olivers Battery and went to OB schol then Kings and Peter Symonds. Have since lived in London and have now made my way back and have been living in suburban Romsey the last 3.5 years. DH and I have decided its time to move back to Winchester as both love it DH works there and have childcare there in form of my fab dad! Also wnat to live walking distance again to shops/parks/pizza express etc!!!

Have seen two properties we are interested in, one in East City/Highcliffe. Historically back when I was young I know Highcliffe had a bad reputation but I actually really like the victorian streets there and think its in a great location. So can any of you guys help me out a bit.....intersting to read this thread re: a 3 bed for 250k ish back in Dec 2009 and how some locals (Anner etc) reckoned in Highcliffe you may get something along those lines/budget.

Anyways we have seen this property; currently 2 bed with upstairs bathroom, but potential top convert loft (we think) has been lived in by same owner for decades is very clean but incredibly dark and dated and needs total redecoration and quite a bit of renovation work. Its on market at 295,000 which seems a bit steep considering amount to do and things I have read on this thread/elsewhere and the zoopla/mouseprice indices online. This is well over our budget and we were hoping to buy for 250-270k really. 278k is our top top budget. What do you think ladies?

What should our tactics/evidence be for low
offers? Would really appreciate your advice. Oh and All Saints, still a fabby ittle school? Thanks so so much
