UPVC window quote - how much should I haggle?

We have had a quote for replacement windows. We used Everest and two local, but well established, independent firms.

The Everest quote was laughable, the other firms came in at £13.5k and £13k.

How much should we expect to negotiate on these prices? We can't afford those prices but the windows need doing desperately. I saw the other thread on Everest negotiation but figured that the local firms may not be as unscrupulous as them in their initial pricing.

Thanks!

I don't know how many windows you have so it's difficult to say but we were quoted £2.5k for three bay windows.

We were quoted £1.3K for 2 fairly large windows and 1 small one.

That sounds a lot of money. I might start by saying that you've had other quotes - can they tell you what their best price is? That its currently between them and another firm? Just don't let on how much the other quote is for...

Haggle lots. Do the 'well, I'm really not sure about doing it now' and 'I'm afraid DH says we'll have to leave it for now' thing.

DH got a local firm to do our fascias/guttering etc for a little under half their initial quote - that was supposed to be a good deal

How many windows is that for? Do you live in a giant mansion?

I had all the windows in my last house replaced for £5500 - 9 windows (2 triple bays) about 7 years ago in the South East.

Thank you. No, sadly we don't live in some giant mansion, just a 3 bed semi (and not a large one!) We have 2 large bays (with stained glass fanlights which would be made from film not glass IYSWIM), 1 small bay with s/glass, 1 large clear glass bay, french doors, back door and 2 'normal' kitchen windows and a very large stair window with stained glass which would be triple glazed with original glass and also the bathroom window would also be triple glazed with the original glass (all of which is in great condition)

That sounds like a lot of windows! Is it a really expensive? I hope it is an inflated price and we can get it reduced . Our windows are ready to fall out of their frames.

They can see we need to work done - do you think I should just be up front and ask them what the best price is or be evasive?

You have to keep pushing - we were told that was their best price 4 times !

Take 75% off the Everest quote and then go back to your local firms and say you've been quoted X and what can they offer(you don't need to say who by - you could say a big national firm and leave it at that if pushed). I suspect the local firms may up their initial prices because they get people who are horrified at the initial Everest quote and will snap up what appears to be a much better deal.

Haggle hard - all's fair in love and double glazing
