Due to exchange, buyers want £15 grand off the price!!!!

Due to exchange and buyers rang up estate agents at the beginning of the week and said they wanted 15 grand off the price - no discernable reason (ie, not survey related)
We have found our dream home, our things are in the process if being packed up, dds picked their news bedrooms etc etc and I'm emotionally very attached to our new house. Any suggestions as to how we deal with the situation? I initially in my panic thought offer them a percentage (5 grand) but realising that the buyers are being totally unethcial (they've got a very good price and we also knocked money off for them when they made a mistake with stamp duty) have provided them with an ultimatum (on advice of estate agents): exchange tomorrow or return the papers...
Feeling very very stressed about all of this..any advice on what to do if they refuse appreciated!

Don't blame you Diege! Cheeky beggars! We are celebrating our Tuesday exchange tonight, I will think of you too - cheers, to us

DaisymooSteiner · 20/11/2009 15:09

Ha ha. They've made themselves look like right idiots. I'd have to make an effort not to giggle next time I spoke to them

rebl · 20/11/2009 15:33

WELL DONE . So pleased that you've exchanged. You must be moving same day as us then (although we've not exchanged today ) if you are moving in 2 weeks. We're not far away from each other, just over the Runcorn bridge here.

Diege · 20/11/2009 15:57

Cheers McDreamy
DaisyMoo, hopefully I will never have to speak to them, though of course now I'm seeing them everywhere in the village. Might just mutter something about the canal looking like it's got a leak on our side..
REBL good luck for your move! Remmeber you're welcome over here for our house warming
Have mentioned that we have a moving date for dds and they're very pleased. Their new furniture has been bought and it waiting in the new house (our sellers are that nice)!

Just read that it is a small community, how wierd that they'd do that.
Think you may have to mention their behaviour to some local gossips who can spread the word on how utterly mercenary your buyers are

Diege · 20/11/2009 16:06

Already done LIZZIE . Oh and let's just say our current neighbours are already forewarmed...the buyers are renting out initally and then moving in themselves when they retire in a few years so will have lots of 'friends' waiting

Diege · 20/11/2009 18:39

Thanks everyone . Loving the idea of that blend NAMECHANGEMOI . Dh has brought back roses and champagne, so in for a good night (though not quite as good as he'd like , I mean there are limits after all)

That is fab news, so pleased for you. What date do you complete? Ours is 30 Nov. Have good night tonight whatever you do

clam · 20/11/2009 19:44

Think you should still leave rotten fish in the attic and nick the lightbulbs. Just for them having been bastards.

Well done for holding your nerve (or allowing your nerve to be held for you!).

The thing is, if a complete stranger came up to us in the street and said, "give us 15 grand" we'd not consider it for a moment. But in a house sale, we actually contemplate it.

The system's mad.

Congratulations, anyway.

YouKnowNothingoftheCrunch · 20/11/2009 19:47

Been lurking, and am very relieved it all turned out ok

Congratulations Diege!

busybutterfly · 20/11/2009 21:40

Am so pleased for you, they'll get theirs somewhere down the line (good ol' karma!)

Enjoy your new house!!

domesticslattern · 20/11/2009 21:44

Hurrah!

fanjolina · 21/11/2009 08:02

Yay! Am so pleased for you.

Diege · 21/11/2009 08:33

Thanks again! DOMESTICSLATTERN, that's disgraceful behaviour from your sellers; as you say, the whole process really brings out the worst in people. There's actually a website that actively encourages gazundering (ie, what happended to us)in a sort of 'it's pay back time' for the gazumping of the '90s . Unfortunately I've been victim to both now!
Completion date is Friday 4th Dec so will now have to actively start packing, as opposed to absently pushing things into piles
We probably will bump into buyers before completion day - just wondering how to play it!

I'm glad everything has ended well.

We were a similar situation 3 years ago - on the morning we were due to exchange the people we were buying from announced they wanted £15000 more than the agreed price.

We wouldn't agree and the sale fell through. I was devastated as it was my dream home. The irony is we found another house which was £15000 cheaper than the price we had agreed. The new house was even better for us and we love living here.

I'm not usually a bitter person, but when I see that the first house is still for sale I do smile.

Diege · 22/11/2009 09:19

Thanks AJUMPEDUPPANTRYBOY It must give you a good degree of satisfaction to see it still for sale - I know it would for me! People can be so grasping can't they, but seems like karma worked in your situation!
We're all going to have a walk past today and see if we can have a sneaky walk through the back garden (it's empty and seller is happy for us to have a nosey). Have discovered Bombay Duck houseware which will suit it perfectly so very excited at the shopping opportunities! (after all, we've saved 15 grand )

I'm a lurker on this thread so glad you held your nerve! What a lovely couple they sound.

Diege · 22/11/2009 09:29

LOL CARGIRL, yes I know, salt of the earth people...Our village is so small I keep on thinking I see them everywhere and worrying what to say. Like it should be me who is embarrassed
