My life seems to consist mainly of thinking about wall lights. Please help me before I go insane.

Basic situation - we have a 17th century farmhouse with very low ceilings, which means that we've got to have wall lights everywhere.

We're trying to go for a style which is a funky mix of antiques, weird stuff that I have randomly bought when DH wasn't looking an eclectic mix of objets d'art, and modern things. I'm also very keen on the on arts and crafts movement.

So what would you go for in the way of wall lights for a hall and sitting room? One major issue is that they have to actually light the room, which means they have to have a high wattage (and with energy saving bulbs). I could go for either something modern, or arts and craftsy, but want to avoid something that looks fuddy-duddy old-lady. For purposes of argument, assume budget no object, as at least it will give me ideas.

I thought some of the Jim Lawrence ones might be a possibility:

you have my sympathy. i think wall lights are terribly difficult. have you thougth about christopher wray: just looked (under wall brackets) andthey have some nice stuff.

also laura ashley has some stuff but i just looked and they all looked a bit old lady

goldenpeach · 14/11/2009 21:06

Bhs does good lighting, they rip off Ashley and other expensive brands. Among really boring stuff they have interesting pieces

Better to go to the store, but have a quick look at link. I found some really good table lamps that look like antiques (I have antique furniture) and a really nice chandelier that was like L Ahsley's.

They have sales on.

goldenpeach · 14/11/2009 21:09

Argos got some really cheap ones too

www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001801&langId=-1&search Terms=WALL+LIGHTS&Submit=GO+%3E

The spiral black wall light ain't bad and can always change the glass bit with something more interesting, also comes in antique brass.

I like budget solutions, so perhaps they are not for you.

Anything on Lighting Direct ? 20% off this weekend too. Lots of choice for all budgets and styles

SausageRocket · 14/11/2009 21:20

I rather like the Willow

SausageRocket · 14/11/2009 21:23

The 'wall lights' ssection has more choice

GrendelsMum · 15/11/2009 12:02

Ooh, thank you everyone!

And an especial thanks to GoldenPeach because BHS may just have the very thing I've been looking for for another room. It may not be the right colour, but it looks roughtly like it. I'll do a trip to BHS during the week.

I do like that twigs / willow style (we had something very similar in our old house), but we're so limited in what we can go for now because they have to fit in a precise space, and give out enough light to light an actual room without any other lighting. That's the biggest problem with most of the lights on offer from Argos and so on - they're all designed to give additional lighting, not to be the main source of lighting.

I might do a special trip down to Christopher Wray to have a look at what they've got on offer.

Grrr. I'm fed up with lights.

Thank goodness for this thread! Thank you for starting it Grendelsmum.

Our house is 1800 Georgian Farmhouse at the front, but 1700? or possibly earlier at the back. I'm having a nightmare finding lights, so I'm about to trawl through every link on this thread!

Bonsoir · 15/11/2009 12:21

I have an Art Deco apartment and hate Art Deco light fittings with a vengeance, while loving the mouldings/parquet/big windows/high ceilings.

We have Artemide Tolomeo light fittings in the sitting room, dining room and two of the bedrooms, and Kartell light fittings in the hall and dining room (as well as other stuff). Artemide Tolomeo fittings come in a huge range of sizes and go with just about anything, plus they really work at lighting rooms. Modern classics and don't disturb your decorative scheme.

Littlefish · 15/11/2009 12:24

HerHonesty

Are the Christopher Wray ones really expensive? I'm always nervous when there aren't prices on the website!

I almost daren't look in case I fall in love with something that's completely over our budget!

Juillet · 15/11/2009 12:39

I started a thread like this about a year ago! The best lights I have found and that we have in the bedroom, are these:

here

I had to get four, we have no ceiling lights at all in most rooms, and tbh I only ever use half at one time (two switches) as they are SO bright.

It's brilliant, they're not dear and the quality is lovely - easy to fit. I tried so many cheapo ones from other places and they were awful, these actually look good and work very well.

I still have some normal bulb ones in the living room so have been obsessively trying to find some equally good but different ones that will provide actual light rather than a dim glow.

Halogen is the way to go imo.

HerHonesty · 15/11/2009 13:40

have to confess i think the CW are pricey BUT I do think light fittings can make or break a room. and actually cheap ones can be a false economy as they break more easily and also the bulbs can forever blow (in my experience).

quite a good thing to do is look at somewhere like cw and find a cheaper copy, you nearly always can.

noddyholder · 15/11/2009 18:32

mac and mac have great lights but can be expensive.there are lights which can also double as display which are lovely in modern or older houseswww.macandmacinteriors.co.uk/foscarini-yet-wall-light-p-5635.html

noddyholder · 15/11/2009 18:36

lightingbycsn.co.uk also really good

Bonsoir · 15/11/2009 18:40

Kartell wall lights in transparent crystal give great light and inexpensive.

Littlefish · 17/11/2009 19:46

What does anyone think of this wall light?

Bonsoir · 18/11/2009 08:38

I don't like it at all.

noddyholder · 18/11/2009 08:39

I don't like it either sorry.

HerHonesty · 18/11/2009 10:26

its a bit hospital. sorry.

Swedes2Turnips0 · 18/11/2009 11:31

Jim Lawrence have really lovely wall lights

GrendelsMum · 18/11/2009 11:44

What do people think to this one?

I might try and take a photo of the hallway so you can actually see it.

noddyholder · 18/11/2009 11:56

I like that one it would suit your house from how you describe it

Bonsoir · 18/11/2009 12:22

I find it trad verging on twee, personally. I do think that lighting (like plumbing) ought to be modern and functional...

noddyholder · 18/11/2009 12:29

I don't think they will look twee in a farmhouse though.I think modern lighting needs height to see it properly whereas this sort of thing lends itself to lower ceilings well.

Bonsoir · 18/11/2009 12:31

I just love modern lighting and plumbing in old houses.
