How much should removals cost?

I'm in the process of getting quotations for my house move in about a months time. We are moving from a 2 bed ground floor flat to a 2 bed house 5 miles away.

The variation in prices is staggering and confusing. The range so far has been from £200-600.

What do you think is a fair price and what did you pay for your house move?

also what made you decide to use a particular moving firm.

thanks

It very much depends where you live. I do not live in the South East and were quoted £200 for movng a 2 bed flat during the summer.

me23 · 10/11/2009 15:29

That's the kind of price I like abetadad, I'm in London and the company that have quoted £200 do you seem very professional, I have written to them asking various questions and they have not answered my emails!
Just had an ok quote from handy moves £448 for 3 men and a van for 6 hrs but you only pay for how long it takes and I'm thinking it should take more than 4 hours.

I paid £790 to move from SW6 to SW8, that was couple of years ago while I was still in London.

We are paying £625 & that includes the professionals doing the packing. We are in E.Herts.

We used Handy Moves for our last two moves and are about to use them again next week. We think are great and they are certainly cheaper than any others we contacted.

We moved from a 3 bed flat and used only two men. I am not sure you need 3 men for a 2 bed flat. So you could get it cheaper with them.

me23 · 10/11/2009 21:51

jesus rollmops that's expensive!
I'm leaning towards the handymoves quote as it includes dismantling and reassembling the beds. Plus if it take 4 hours should only come to about £300.

Yes, they helped my dh dismantle and put together the beds for us too. They were really good.

£800 in June 2009 - South East

Lapsedrunner · 10/11/2009 21:58

...got 3 quotes, lowest £760 plus loads of penalties for late key collection etc, £950 highest. 2-3 bed terrace, local move, packed breakables

PfftTheMagicDragon · 10/11/2009 22:07

Check their insurance, we got a low quote for a move - turned out they didn't have any.

We paid £600 for a 3 bed to 3 bed move and that was one of the cheaper offers.

rebl · 11/11/2009 18:52

We've got quotes ranging from £750 - £1250 for a 3 bed to 3 bed moving 7 miles. They all have insurance. They all including packing but not unpacking. The cheapest is insured to work in the loft so we'll be going with them because the thought of packing my loft fills me with dread.

sylar · 11/11/2009 18:59

moved 18 months ago and it cost £1500. Moved again 2 weeks ago (same amount of stuff but some already packed since we didn't unpack from the time before) and it cost £900. Four bed house plus large climbing frame from garden which took up a fair amount of space even when partially dismantled.

Beware of those who don't come around to do a quote. They'll charge on an hourly rate and the coffee/lunch breaks will fill you with intense frustration!

stillfrazzled · 12/11/2009 13:33

I moved last week (3 bed flat to 3 bed house two streets away) and it cost £500. That included all packing materials, plus a lorry and two fabulously helpful and friendly men who got our enormous sofas out without dismantling the place, fixed a bookcase that fell to bits (bloody Billys) in transit and thanked us for being so nice and organised.

Took about six hours including waiting to complete sale, and was worth every penny.
