Is it really expensive to replace banister rails, end posts, spindles etc ??

My stairs are in a god awful mess and have been since before I moved in. There are bits of wood gouged out, mismatched spindles, spindles upside down, basically its is just awful.

I don't realy know what to do with it where to start and in an ideal wolrd i'd have it all reipped out and replaced but I have heard that this is very costly.

It is actually a HA house, but they won't do anything about it as they seemed to think it was fine when they gave me the house.

So far all I have done is have my dad secure some of the loose spindles and the base post which was really loose.

My only other ides were to remove the handrail and banisters alltogether, but i think this is a) not allowed and b)I have children so not really safe, or to box it in, but the hall and landing are already quite dark.

Any ideas ??

it is costly and if you are not staying then probably not worth doing. re removing them, in new houses you are not allowed to do this, and its very unsafe.

Thanks, I am staying for the forseeable future, but if it is that expensive it's not going to be an option anyway.

Will have to give sanding another go.

The materials for a new handrail ,newel posts and spindles would come in at around £100 for a single flight but the main cost would be a tradesmans time if you (or your Dad) cant do it .

If you or you know someone good at DIY its not a difficult task to simply renovate rather than renew the lot. Spindles start at around £2 each so you could just do those at least and refix the rest.

My dad could do it standing on his head, but actually getting him to do it is like pulling teeth.

I am going to have another go at sanding it again and then try and decide what to do next.
