What to do with black iron cast fireplace in master bedroom?

You probably think I am crazy but I want to remove it. The room is quite big with currently sky-blue wallpapers, but I intend to change colour to white-ish. The black iron cast fireplace does not suit my image of the light bedroom at all. My ideas:

  1. To close fireplace completely and put bed on that wall
  2. To change black iron cast surrounding to white marble arch surrounding, close the mouth of the fireplace, so that would be decorative item of the room.
  3. Leave as it is because people value (?) fireplaces and it will increase the value of house when I sell (?)

The problem I did not mention here is that although the room is big (standard master bedroom with two windows in Victorian terrace) there is a lack of wall space due to windows, fitted in wardrobe, fireplace. If I close the fireplace at least I could put bed there.

Any advises welcome.

I agree that the best option is to paint it white, in fact I am planning on doing this to the Victorian fireplace in our bedroom.
You could call Farrow & Ball or Dulux and ask which paint they suggest for cast iron, of just ask in B&Q?
vacaloca your fireplace looks lovely, very stylish...

Toja - that sounds yummy....

I should think the best bet would be to get a pot of metal primer and give it a first coat with that. Then give it a couple of coats of your chosen paint. Make sure it's cleaned first, and not sure wether you might need to sand lightly so the paint has something to stick to ?

Vacaloca - I love your built in wardrobe. I hanker after that type of property

I'm afraid the second one is not mine. Mine is the not-so-stylish first one, and not even that anymore. The kids took over that big room and we've been relegated to the loft (sans lovely fireplace).

Again and again, thanks for advices. Now when idea is in my mind, refurbishing the bedroom is inevitable!!
I will look through the ideas how to paint cast iron, but I think I will have to take off the black paint first.

I'm sure you don't have to take it off first. A bit of mine has chipped and I can see the old paint underneath.

I tried stripping a painted cast iron fireplace once, must have tried removing about 5 layers of different coloured paint !

I gave up in the end, took it out and sent it off to be dipped and sandblasted. It came back the most GORGEOUS gun metal gray colour

I have restored a cast iron fireplace with paint stripper while pregnant. It's not that difficult. You can buy special heat resistant paint at homebase to paint it with.

Can anyone help me. I moved into a small 1930's semi last year which the owners had extended and the wow factor was an open plan living/dining/conservatory area.

The back of the room has a glass domed type roof with long windows underneath. It looks great but is hellish in summer as even on a mild day the heat just builds up until about 10pm we are stifling and sweating just watching tv.

Apparantly blinds will be very expensive and will not keep out enough heat and I am not sure if reflective panels will work and also look awful.

The only solution i can think of is to put frame on that section of the room and add doors. What do you think?

am so sorry have added on to your thread instead of starting new one. Ignore me!

goldenpeach · 05/09/2009 22:42

Is it a wooden framed (the roof)? If so you could stick in cup hooks and engineer some blinds yourself - but only if you can sew. Or you can put wooden/metal blinds on long windows? Post a pic on your profile and I will have a think.

Thanks Goldenpeach. I already have blinds on long windows, it is the glass roof, I think, that is the problem. Sorry to hijack your thread Toja. I have started a new one!
