I've just seen an advert for a new Sarah Beeny programme, our circumstances fit the bill but haven't contacted them. Would you do it? DH says we should, I wonder what we get out of it. Do they pay you for these programmes?

Re the Home Show. I do find it utterly that they homeowners hand over a budget and George does a 3D drawing of the design, everyone goes away happy. Next scene is George looking wooried and telling the homeowners he needs another 50% and the homeowners look at each other in a 'shit!' sort of a way and then just hand the cash over !

sausage, dh rants at that programme precisely for that reason! He's a crap architect, quoting for a job and having absolutely no contigency fund when the inevitable hiccups arise!

AAlso - why is SBs new show called Property Snakes and Ladders? Its just identical to property ladder so why a diff name?

Oh and George always puts on his tight white teeshirt to knock down a wall which invariably needs to be put back up when the plans change!

he gives the homeowners such unrealistic expectations

SM I suspect because in previous series some made a profit basically on the back of a rising market rather than their improvements - no longer likely to be the case hence Snakes and Ladders.

re tight white t-shirt. He has a very average body, so I'm not sure why he needs to thrill us with shots of him brushing his teeth in a towel . Nice bloke and all that really....

Totally Sausage, and he spends upwards of £100k remodelling houses that are worth about £250k. I can't believe that what he does will add that much back in value to the property.

Hahah my DP just rolls his eyes at George - stating that he's not an architect whose plans he'd want to have to build! "bit of 3d drawing on a wall and then they hand over twice as much cash as originally stated...blah, blah, blah!"

sausage.. he doesn't exactly have pecs to die for, he's not hideous but he's no Arnie!

Disclaimer: I don't think Arnie has pecs to die for either, but he was the only person with really big pecs I could think of

SausageRocket · 28/07/2009 18:29

LOL @ Arnie reference.

To be honest, anyone can be a great architect with a massive budget and a v good construction team behind them. The skill is making a tightish budget work and still coming out with something WOW at the end.

Report
HeadFairy · 28/07/2009 18:39

Exactly! As an architect you're usually given a budget and stick to it while trying to give the client as close to their vision as you can afford, not totally sell them your vision and then whack them with a massive bill! Still, makes good telly when each week George sighs at the sight of their pathetic £150k cheque!

Report
SausageRocket · 28/07/2009 18:40

I know. I pity the poverty-struck proletariat too with their paltry £150k to spend on a loft conversion and a few kitchen units.

Report
HeadFairy · 28/07/2009 18:43

with that £150k cheque I could be mortgate free!!!!! Free I tell you

kitsmummy · 28/07/2009 19:23

Did anyone see last week's Home show when they gave a cheque for £70k, he then did fab drawings, they were delighted....and then he said it would cost £130k. They paid up and he didn't finish part of the job, basically it was a swish kitchen and loft conversion and not a lot else. The "Study" in reality turned out to be a desk underneath the stairs!

I've done a property show - home makeover thing. It was a lot of hassle BUT Talkback did a lot of work for us - we really couldn't have done it ourselves, had run out of steam and needed a boost. The stuff they did - mainly decorating but buying some furniture/rugs and nick nacks and building us a lovely bookcase - must have added up to a few grand as well.

Very embarrassing when people at work realised, though! Occasionally gets shown on digi channels and we always get teased...

Oh god, a 150k cheque. Pay off some of the mortgage and move house. Hell of a lot better than some new cushions and a loft conversion.

I agree that they make the homeowners look like slightly deluded knobs, well, quite often they do! but I'd be tempted, because the people end up with a lovely house. It's worth it probably. I can't remember anybody I've ever seen on one of those shows, and your friends will all miss it!

I've done a TV makeover programme!!!

It was great. We had just bought our 1st flat and they did the living room for free. At the time we loved it. now, looking at the video it is

SoccerMom, I'd gues that the name-change is in recognition that house prices can come DOWN as well as up. LIke, before, in the boom times, that hardly occured to people.

Has anyone seen an episode of the Home Show where George hasn't left a room with plumbing et all to do e.g. utility or bathroom?

Last week he didn't do the utility or the study but did give them an outside room that they had not requested and tonnes of soft furnishing and ornaments.

I'd definitely do a Sarah Beeny show because her advice is excellent - I looked her up recently, to see if she was pregnant again, and we were born on the same day (alas, one of us has not aged so well) and she is expecting her 4th child.

The one with the outside room was ridiculous, I thought. He seemed to spend most of the budget on redecorating downstairs. Much as I would love my house to be "remodelled" I do think he's very expensive.

I'd be a bit pissed off if he spent a tons of my money on cushions. I'm quite capable of choosing my own thanks

We had a phonecall about this new SB programme - my husband is a builder - and they were looking for people with large projects and not enough money to do them.
