I had a new kitchen last year and opted for star galaxy black granite worktops.

I am trying really hard to look after them, cleaning up water spills etc. But... there are now loads of water marks on it.

Any suggestions on how I can get rid of the marks.. and also what daily cleaner should I use??

Thanks in advance for your help.

Are all you granite haters in the south with hard water problems ?

I've had granite in 4 houses and have never been disappointed with it.

Method and e cloths all the way.

Maybe I havent got as high standards as some on here Confused

We get rust marks from Le Creuset pans if DH forgets to put a cloth on the drainer first. Barkeeper's Friend gets them off. I was recommended by a kitchen shop. I don't think it scratches.

Another one who lives in the hard water south!
I am a Wedding Caterer and pastry maker hence having granite in my kitchen.
Clean with bio products to kill bacteria and then sray with glass cleaner and buff up with a eco cloth.
I use my granite as a mirror to put my lippy on!

Method granite cleaner is good. Also I spray with detergent wash clean with cloth then use a window squeegee to go over, brings it up really good.

Come on mums, think out of the box. Your Karcher window cleaner does more than shine the glass. Wipe the granite with a soapy cloth then use the Karcher and finish off with a dry tea towel or kitchen roll.

Hi I am a worktop polisher star galaxy is lovely like most of the granite but you still have to take care of it stone is stone and anything soaks in to it recommended seal yearly and clean often jet black is the worst for marks just for show recommend a lighter brand easier to look after

Adamtelf · 08/11/2015 22:11

Micro clothes are good too if you have quartz any scratches like starlight black sometimes works a black marker or granite maybe black wax or crayon sealing makes it look better in a way like new

I purposely avoided dark granite as someone I knew had black and said whatever she tried they always looked either dirty or smeary. I have shades of browns creams white & black in mine and it works really well, I don't feel like I have to clean them constantly

We currently have white Quartz. It's ace. Never smears etc. Before this we had mirror chip Quartz in black. Was a nightmare would have to rub like mad with ecloth to stop smears. Someone since has suggested we might have been supplied with crap quality Chinese imported Quartz, as it isn't usual for Quartz. Before that we had black granite. Everyone said it was a nightmare for smears but we never had any problems. So....there you go. 3 work tops, 3 different experiences!

We have a creamy coloured granite that is flecked with brown. It looks lovely from afar and then you get close up and you can see all the crumbs hiding on the flecked service.

I came here as I thought I had messed my black with stars granite worktop up. I used a degrease which went dull, then tried lemon juice, ithe went white, so started wondering quite how I was going to tell hubby. The kitchen has been done about 5 yrs and hard water area. I then thought I would try a wax Polish but couldn't find it. So tried a leather balsam ( renepar) that's supposed to be used on shoes, bridles etc. I put it on with kitchen towel rubbed it in then used a cloth to buff it - it's like new, every Mark has come out and it honestly looks new. So don't panic. Xx

I have a white and grey swirly granite and I just wipe down with a wet cloth so far. No smears visible at all...Yet!

threatmatrix · 01/08/2018 17:16

Invest in a karcher window cleaner, use a wet sponge with some washing up lights on it, clean the top, use the karcher and buff with a micro fibre cloth or spray with method granite cleaner and buff after. ( sometimes you can get a really good spray in homesense).

I’ve had black granite for 12 years, in two kitchens. Never noticed any smears. I just use soapy water and a microfibre cloth; nothing fancy. I’ve always found it very hard wearing and easy care, so I’m very surprised by this thread!

MadMaryBoddington · 02/08/2018 12:09

To be fair though, it’s black with grey flecks. I guess if you’ve got plain, homogenous black that might be a different kettle of fish.

flirtygirl · 02/08/2018 12:42

Had black star galaxy for years and never had a problem, used fairy and water daily.

I used a scourer around the sink and occasionally bleach and zoflora with no smears. Live in a hard water area.

augustusglupe · 02/08/2018 20:44

I’ve had my granite tops for 17 years. I’ve always used hot soapy water and a spontex sponge cloth and they’re still like new.
