Any experiences of houses with annexes ?

We are considering the possibility of joining forces with a relative to purchase a larger property, ideally with a self contained annexe. Has anyone done this and how easy/difficult was it to find such a property ? Also, has it worked ? ie are you happy with the set up ?

Ooooo, how spooky, we are looking for similar, will be interested to see the responses.

Hello saggy. Haven't even started looking yet as we need to sit down and thrash out details and make a decision whether to go ahead or not. Am interested to see if other people have done this though.

Mind you I have been browsing t'internet looking at propery porn, sigh...

Yes!! I live in one.
we bought our house with annexe in 2003 and on thursday (as long as we exchange grrr, ) we will be moving to another.

Mum lives in our annexe, she has MS so needed some support. unfortunately due to her condition the annexe is no longer adequate due to its layout and the fact she is not 'in with us' so to speak so we've foudn somewhere more suited.

its been dead hard to sell mind, people kept viewing and saying "ooh, we love the house but dont' know what we'd do with an annexe" so, they are out there but not always easy to find - or sell!

just re-read your post freewheelinfranklin - yes, we've been happy and its worked really well. on and off we've bickered but its been lovely for the children to grow up with nanny so near and we've all had our privacy when needed.

I've got a house with a self-contained granny flat which we rent out to friends (so far 3 have been excellent and one was fine for a year and then went batshit and it ended up with bailiffs...) Not sure how many such places come on the market as I think they usually get sold separately - we leapt at this one!

My ILs have a large chalet bungalow with a small upstairs where SIL lives, so she's separate from them except for going through the hall. ILs own the whole house though, SIL doesn't. Finding large bungalows is very hard though.

We are in the same situation too. We are thinking of having an extension to include an annexe to accomodate my dad over a garage. We have also looked into moving but houses with annexes seem quite rare unless you spend £1,000,000!

Looking at doing this too. I asked the question about living next door to the parents about a week ago on here and got really positive responses. I would link to the thread but don't know how but you should find it in Am I Being Unreasonable.

Re the building work, we are currently investigating the possibility of building the annex rather than buying a house with one already there, on the basis that the cost of the annex build would add more back onto the value. Should open up more possible properties as long as they have sufficient land.

Oo thanks for your replies. I've had a quick look online and agree it seems like these sort of properties are few and far between.

We are thinking of joining forces with my partners aunt. Need to really talk it through with her although have already discussed with partner. He is all for just getting a house with more bedrooms but I am v strongly of the opinion that she should have her own space (as shoudl we) to minimise risk of falling out etc. Will try and find thread GoodWitch, ta.

My thread was called something about moving next door to parents...

I agree you need separate space rather than living in the same house, own front door, even separate gardens if possible to put a fence down the middle. Even if you get along really well, you will want your own space sometimes.
