If you are having redecoration how many coats of paint should be used?

Hi - we are hopefully having our home decorated soon. We have had various quotes for the work - some are more detailed then others. what I would like to know is if you have walls and wood fittings - skirtings /fitted wardrobes painted how may coats of paint should be done - is there a difference between the two?

We have been quoted for walls - one mist coat (whatever that is) and 2 full coats of emulsion and for timber work one undercoat and one top coat.

Does this sound correct? Many thanks

That sounds about right.the base coats and all the filling rubbing down etc take a lot of time but give a great finish.

yes it does sound right to me. Miscoat is the coat of thinned down white emulsion they put on the wall first to stop your expensive coloured paint being sucked into the walls by porous plaster and leaving your final finish all patchy.

Yes that sounds correct, most of the good paint co's would say you need 2 top coats to get a true colour.

You should be ok with one top coat for the woodwork, unless you are using a dark colour, then you could need 2.

Any exterior woodwork should have at least 2 top coats.
