Gloss painting with a baby

Hello. I live in a small flat and we're currently decorating. We will need to do some gloss painting of doors but I have a 7-month old baby. Are gloss paints safe for use these days? Or would I need to move out for a few days (that would be really difficult).

Thanks!

I dont think gloss is in vogue any more. I think a matt or silk finish is nicer but whatever I would open windows till baby is in bed.

for radiators use radiator paint.

gloss isn't so nice really is it?

misdee · 24/05/2009 20:29

i'd use a paintbrush rather than the baby

at gloss.
Get a water-based satinwood or eggshell instead.
Much easier to clean up too.

You can get water based quick dry 'gloss' (dulux do it). It looks fine, though does need an extra coat, it's easier to handle (wash with water/soap not white spirit etc) than regular gloss as well as being nicer to breathe around.

I'd second the water based 'gloss' too. It is a wee bit more work but you don't have to worry about any after effects. Oil based 'gloss' is nasty.

All our painted wood-work is done with the water based stuff and it looks fab!

I'm sorry, but I looked at the title of this thread, and thought, 'wouldn't a brush be easier?'

Gosh, I realise I've been living abroad for a while but never realised gloss had gone out of fashion!

Thanks people, will try satinwood.

Can you go over oli based gloss with water based?

I tried this the other day and it just went all, like water on a smooth surface iyswim. It didn't stick at all.

Doris - I'd say if you have already got gloss on them, use it again - lots of wndows open and time outside with baby.

Gloss is far harder wearing, doesn't scrape off and better finish imo.

I would use water based (acrylic) if painting new wood though for above reasons.

nickytwotimes · 25/05/2009 09:23

I've never had any problem going over gloss with water-based providing I've rubbed it down first to provide a key.

Ah thanks Nicky...I'd try it but my mother already does this, and she said it still srapes off if you are a bit more persistent!!
