How important is ceiling height to you when flat hunting?

We currently live in a 1930's building with great ceiling height. We are looking to move and saw a flat we really liked at the weekend. But it is lower ground floor in a conversion and the ceilings have no height to them at all.

Issues that worry me: we currently have ceiling fans in all rooms - no way would this be possible with the ceiling height of this flat. Also, bunk beds. My boys have bunk beds and my almost 8 year old can stand up on his top bunk without hitting his head on the ceiling. What happens with lower ceilings and bunkbeds? And would it feel claustrophobic in the end?

What do you all think?

Do you really need ceiling fans? We have a wall mounted one at my shop which is very efficient too.
Does your DS need to stand up on his bunk?

I prefer high ceilings, i think most people would. I was loath to reduce the height of the ceilings on the first floor in our house in order to get an extra floor on and still comply with the regulation for overall height...but you know what - we got used to it!
We still have high ceilings onthe groundfloor but quite low ones on the midde floor where the living room and our bedroom are.
If the flat fulflls all your other criteria I'd go for it.

Do we need ceiling fans? Well, we have had them for almost 5 years in our current flat. We use the one in our living room and our bedroom daily. But we live in a noisy area so don't open the windows in the evening. The new flat is on a quiet road.

No, my son does not need to stand up on his bunk bed. I am just worried about it feeling smaller somehow.

Light would be more of an issue for me if the flat is on a lower ground floor.

I miss the ceiling height I had in the old flat BUT we've got better space etc so it wasn't a deal breaker for us

write a list of all the pros and cons

v important to me - it feels much smaller with low ceilings

InternationalFlight · 17/05/2009 22:17

I like tall ceilings but tbh you'll have to reckon it with everything else, the way it feels, the light, the warmth...you lose heat with high ones, things like that. A list like someone said is a good idea.

Did you feel it was a happy kind of flat? I just know usually iykwim, if some where is good for us.

Light was good - though we did view on a sunny day. Lots of windows, patio doors onto a south facing garden, and not too "lower". Some of the lower ground flats near where we are now are really like going into the depths of the earth this one is not.

I think the adjustment to lower ceilings would be hard. But I did like the flat - it felt like somwhere we could live.

Are you going to be buying or renting?
Are you abroad? (wondering about the need for fans - I live in Spain so we use them here)

Buying. And no, we are in London

Summers get hot here too. And with no airconditioning, we love having ceiling fans.
