How much do new bathrooms cost?

I have NO idea about these things or whether it's even worth getting quotes (I reckon we could stretch to a couple of grand max).

It would be ripping out existing stuff, replacing it with new things (including shower which we currently don't have) retiling the walls and putting in a new floor.

if you are replacing like for like, i would budget 3k max. if you are moving stuff around, its usually quite a bit more. a lot depends on the sort of fixtures you use - tiles can be 5£ a square metre.. or 500 a square metre!

HeadFairy · 12/05/2009 13:17

We have a tiny bathroom, only a metre and a half in all directions, however we replaced bath, sink, loo and fitted new shower, plus switched around the way the bath went. I went to bathstore, and got our tiles from worlds end tiles so nothing stupidly extravagant and it cost £5k.

lalalonglegs · 12/05/2009 14:05

You should be able to do this for £2k if you are very careful about sourcing your goods (hello ebay) and, as womble said, do not go mad on tiles etc. If it is small, look at end of lines etc for tiles and flooring. Buy some magazines to see how to create a good look on a budget. Do not skimp on shower - a good one is worth any amount of money.

Joolsiam · 12/05/2009 14:16

We're doing this at the moment - nothing extravagant and a teeny bathroom, but I reckon tiles, flooring, bath, shower, loo, sink with cupboard underneath and heated towel rail have cost around £2k before you add on any labour.

I am sure you could do it cheaper if you work Ebay / ends of lines etc - a lot depends on how much work you can do yourself and how much time you need from plumbers etc

Fizzylemonade · 12/05/2009 18:59

We have just done our en-suite so shower, no bath. It was from Tesco bathrooms, cost £800 for pedestal sink, tap, back to wall toilet in cabinet thing (to conceal pipework) 900mm quadrant shower with cast stone tray (that was a bargain at £170!!)

Tiles were B&Q £10 per box, we just tiled the shower area and above the sink. so £30 plus £20 for grout and tile adhesive.

Mirror was Ikea for £13. Flooring was £60. We put down ply to even out the floor.

Electric shower was £180 triton.

Towel rail was £100 ish. We fitted everything ourselves apart from the shower -spark did that and plasterer who was £250.

Total around £1600 including new bin

To fit it we were quoted £1000! Which is why we did it ourselves.

Good luck.

I've just had a quote from a plumber to refit our bathroom (sink, bath, separate shower and loo), moving things around a bit but nothing drastic. It was £550 for labour and his parts with me providing all the other bits, bath, sink, shower etc. So I think it can cost what you want it to really.

GrapefruitMoon · 12/05/2009 19:03

Yes you can get the stuff itself fairly cheaply, it is the labour that costs a lot. If you shop around I would have thought you should be able to do it for 2k though - it will keep the costs down if you put everything back in the same places so pipes don't need to be moved. Good luck with finding a plumber though - can't find a good, reliable one where I live!

lynniep · 12/05/2009 19:08

Um, if you are a complete no-hoper with DIY like me and DH and just want to go somewhere that does the lot - ie B&Q (no I'm not recommending them) then it cost us about £5k.

Our bathroom is pretty small and we didnt move anything but we replaced everything and had a power shower put in.

I wasnt carefully thinking about stuff - I just picked what I liked and went with that, because with B&Q its the installation cost thats the killer.

I do think we paid more than necessary, but we didnt want to do anything ourseves. You can see exactly what we did here

Have just done this too - quite a big room, replacing bath, loo, sink and installing a proper shower over the bath. New door to boiler house in that room and new wooden counter over the machines (doubles as a utility room) New floor and put in underfloor heating but wall tiles left as are. £5k. Labour was about 2.3k I think.

We managed it ourselves and chose all the fittings online etc - but came a cropper on this so beware. Suite was from Online Bathrooms and loo was approved by plumber but when it came didn't fit (plumbers mistake). Online Bathrooms happily sold us a replacement but although we returned the original in the same packaging and used a specialist courier they did not accept it back claiming that it was cracked - a mistake that cost us £300. So although they are expensive this is one of those times when I wish we had paid the premium and gone to a specialist like Bathstore - or even paid a bit more and gone in person to Wickes or similar.

Apart from that we are very happy and it is LOVELY having the kids quickly shower every night.

lynnieP what a transformation!

Anifrangapani · 12/05/2009 19:47

It is a how long is a piece of string question. It is possible to get the suite ( WC/ WHB and bath) for under £200 and use 4x6 bumpy white tiles at £3.50 / msq..... but at the other end of the market you can pay nearly £2,000 for a shower head alone and £30 / tile.

Most "standard" bathrooms come in at around 3.5 - 5K fitted. At the moment you should get some good prices on the fitting because the market is really slack - especially private residential market.

wombleprincess · 12/05/2009 19:54

dont dont dont skimp on taps - a cheap tap is ultimately a waste of money as they are the first things to go.

susanbee · 12/05/2009 20:27

We are trying to replace our bathroom stuff and put units in. Job includes taking tiles off from floor to ceiling and retiling part of it. We are getting quotes in the region of 2500 for the fittings (Bathstore) and 3500 for the labour .

Not sure how to proceed really.

Tinker · 12/05/2009 21:42

lynniep - what are the dimensions of your bathroom? I'm thinking of swapping current bathroom with a bedroom as the bedroom is smaller. I'm interested in whether it can be done well - like yours.

KB71 · 12/05/2009 22:28

Hi There,

My advice would be to buy branded bath fittings from a plumbers merchant. I have always found this to work out much cheaper than Bathstore. Crosswater and Bauhaus are good quality, but there are lots of other reasonably priced and stylish brands. The beauty of buying from a plumbers merchant is that you can usually negotiate a 20% discount off the retail price. Most plumbers merchants carry a range of brochures that you can look through.

Good luck.

lynniep · 13/05/2009 13:25

Tinker - Dimensions of our bathroom are approximately 170cm wide (the exact length of a standard bath - although actually the room is short so the bath had to be sunk into the wall both ends to get it to fit!) and 240cm long. So enough room for the loo and sink to sit side by side with enough room in between.

Fimbo · 13/05/2009 13:28

My parents have just had their bathroom re done, including electrics and flooring it cost £8k.

Tinker · 13/05/2009 17:58

lynniep - thanks. Ours is about 6'6" square. Hmm.

Rollmops · 14/05/2009 09:28

Get as many quotes as you can. Our recent project was quoted from £4000 to £14000, then a contractor who has worked on the house before and done a superb job, quoted the job at £4500.
