It's definitely possible, but the snag is that marble is porous and stains. I think it also etches on contact with acids. The kitchen designer I talked to when we did ours was keen on it aesthetically but I think practically it's not great unless you are prepared for lots of special care.

cece · 10/05/2009 22:53

I was told it was too porous to be practical even though it is beautiful.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 10/05/2009 22:57

ooh i see you are both in agreement as to issues.. i see!!

looks quite un likely then as i have destroyed the maple worktops in the kitchen now!!

that is a shame

thankyou both!

I had white marble worktops once. They weren't treated or varnised and did stain but the stains came off if you scrubbed them with the rough side of one of those green sponges.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 10/05/2009 23:22

ooh thereis hope!

did you like them shite?

If you don't fancy granite, seek out some Corian worktops in kitchen shops. We've just put them in our new build and they look fantastic. Its totally moulded, no seams and you can mould in your sink, drainer etc. It can be 'melted' down and scuffs/scratches rubbed out. Ours are very light in colour. Won't absorb stains easily and sinks can be bleached.

there is a home-owners section

And do you know Quadrophenia (stage production) is touring at the moment

They are becoming hugely popular again.V popstar and look gorgeous but quite impractical.great for lying on though just don't cook anything

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 10/05/2009 23:34

it is the red wine i am worrying about noddy!

Shitemum · 10/05/2009 23:41

Plenty of red wine on ours and it all came off.
I loved them. I even recycled one as a doorstep for my shop when we moved out of that house - we had put the worksurfaces in and the place was going o be gutted by the owner so he didn't mind...

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 10/05/2009 23:43

thanks shitemum - food for thought....

will ask builder what he thinks, on second thoughts might not bother - will toss and turn about it all night instead

I've got a marble hearth (slab) and it's v hard to get marks off it.

I put a wine glass on it once and it left a ring mark which was really hard to remove. Also I spilt candle wax on it. Again, a nightmare to get out.

wombleprincess · 11/05/2009 12:55

i have a marble topped kitchen table. its been in my family since 1981 and is going very strong!

lalalonglegs · 11/05/2009 13:03

I love marble - I think it would look amazing. If staining is an issue, how about getting a pink or red granite rather than boring black? Lots of pattern in it, similar to marble.

SpaceTrain · 11/05/2009 13:58

Have you looked into arenastone as an alternative?

It is a type of quartz and looks stunning. Also easy to clean, non-porous so doesn't stain. Speensing on the size of the area, it can be cut out of one piece, so no joins. And even if there are joins they are hard to spot.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 11/05/2009 20:01

gosh real mixed bag of responses here

now i am wondering about large marble piece for over sized chopping board
