We are considering moving further afield to get more for our money - what is Bishop's Stortford like? Our little boy is 2 so we will need good primary scholls. Thanks

In what sense? Schools are pretty good, I think - certainly at secondary level there are some excellent choices, and some primaries are very good. Quick train journey into London so very commutable if you work in the City, and very easy to get into the West End as well. Pretty-ish countryside nearby, and some lovely villages around there. For a town of its size and wealth, it is pretty poorly endowed with restaurants, shops etc. In terms of what you get for your money, I think it's still quite expensive (if you're moving out of London, which I assume you are). (Disclaimer: I don't live there, but I know a lot of people who do...)

I don't live there, but we go there for shopping, cinema etc (we are about 15 minutes drive away) - seems quite nice. I do the London commute each day and it's ok (I stay on the train for a few more stops though).

Thanks for the info, have never been to BS but someone told me it is supposed to be nice. I had been looking on rightmove & houseprices are a lot more reasonable than where I live (East Herts). Seen a lovely house within budget but need to do a lot of homework on the area....

We live in Kelvedon - about a 30 minute drive away, schools are great here, lovely village feel, low crime rate and lots of lovely local mumsnetters. Houses aren't mega expensive, we moved here from Kent for better standard of life and we most certainly have that.

(Am I selling this to you?)

The Wraglings is well placed for walking to the station (45 mins to London Liverpool Street. Also walking distance to excellent single sex secondary schools and IB school. The local primary (Thorn Grove) is ok I think. The better primarys are in other parts of the town. There is ALWAYS problems getting into the good primary and secondary schools. Having said that there is a community secondary school also within walking distance with fantastic sports facilities and above average results. There is some road noise depending whereabouts in the close the house is.

For the money you have to spend I think there is a wide choice although not all would be that close to the centre. You are about a 10 min walk from the town centre. I would also check the flight path from Stansted as I can't remember if it's south of the town or not.
