You can chip/blast the pebbledash off but the brickwork can be so damaged that it needs to be rerendered anyway. I think rendering is the simplest way forward - price will depend on size of house and location. I have only ever used plasterers for interiors so can't really give a figure for exterior - presumably would need a lot of scaffolding which would be several hundred pounds (we had the front and back of our terrace done for £450 two years ago). I think it will look a lot nicer though.

We recently painted our tired grey looking 3 bed 1950's semi, just straight over the pebbledash with exterior paint, it took us a long time (not easy stuff to paint) but looks so much better. As all the houses on the street are pebbledashed, some have done the same as us and painted over (cost 2-300 + labour) some have re-rendered (I think the neigbours said it cost a couple of thousand).

We are delighted with the result, it really freshens up the appearance of the house.

hope that helps

We had our pebbledashed edwardian terrace rendered last year. Initially we had hoped that we could chip off the hideous pebbledash and perhaps paint the bricks, but we were advised that it would be a long and expensive job and the state of the bricks underneath could not be guaranteed. We paid 2.2K. it looked fab

may i please ask what 'rendered' means? Is it covering over the pebbledash with a smoother surface?
thankyou
