Fitting a new kitchen worktop - who?

We're updating our kitchen - changing the doors, drawer fronts, oven, hob, sink etc and the worktop.

DP will be doing the doors etc but we wanted to get the worktop done professionally.

Except.

I called a kitchen fitter and got the distinct impression he wasn't interested unless it was an entire kitchen refit with new cupboards etc. I don't need that - I like the layout, the units are fine and the doors drawer fronts etc are a perfect match size wise for Wickes.

I've looked in the local paper and seen joiners etc. Would they be able to fit my worktop? Has anyone had this done and who did it?

A joiner will do it but it can be a struggle to find one because, like your kitchen fitter, they get a bit sniffy about just being given a bit of the job (he will also bitch like mad about how unaligned your cabinets are if you do find one). Lots of ringing round, I'm afraid. If you have bought your worktop from a timber merchant, you could ask if they know of anyone.

what's your worktop made of?

ClaireDeLoon · 22/04/2009 10:51

oh how annoying!! I will try ringing around. The guy I called was recommended by Wickes on the basis he does exactly what we're after!

gigglewitch it is just an ordinary laminated worktop nothing fancy!

Starlight did you get anyone to do it in the end?

I need to do this too. My plumber said to give him a ring when I had bought the worktop and he would come round with the joiner they use. Plumber does the sink and gas hob refitting, and joiner, er joins it all.

I can't decide on new worktop though... What is your one like?

It's sort of grey blue effect - from B&Q as I preferred it to the Wickes ones. We've gone for nice shakery style oak doors from Wickes and a bluey grey slate tile for the floor. We're not changing the wall tiling as I like it as it is.

Where are you based?

Bedfordshire, quite near the borders with Herts. The guy I called was from Hitchin which isn't far.
