Anyone know Wellow (Bath)?

Does anyone know Wellow near Bath? I've seen a nice house there (on the net, not in person) but would like to get a better idea of the village before making a long trip to view. I should add that I know Bath well as lived there for 3 years but no experience of surrounding villages, Thanks

Hi. I live in Bath and have couple of friends who live in Wellow and seem to love it - it is definitely thought of as a desirable village, excellent vilage school, nice pub, very pretty, not too far out of Bath, seems to have good community etc. Would you need to get into Bath each day for school run, work or whatever, as traffic and parking are awful. If you had sepcific questions re Wellow I could find out for you.

permabagofminieggsonthego · 21/04/2009 09:04

Need to change my Easter name!

littlerach · 21/04/2009 09:05

Wellow is beautiful, good school, was a litle shop.
Have a friend who lives there.

Thanks for your replies. We're looking at this as a long term move and private schooling is likely to feature at some stage so yes may well need to access schools each morning. I guess being in Wellow would restrict us to Monkton & Prior Park in terms of accessability? Having said that would be very happy with good village school and Beechen Cliff . Debating whether to arrange a viewing this weekend .

The 2 families I was thinking of have tinies at the village school and older ones at King Edwards. Yes Beechen Cliff got good reputation too though obv only for boys. Definitely do a viewing - Wellow lovely!

Sorry, awful grammar there! Missing apostrophes etc - I will be flamed by the punctuation police

verylapsedrunner · 21/04/2009 13:45

Thanks Perma. Anyone else out there able to add anything?

Wellow very pretty.

Also for getting into Bath you've got the park and ride at the top of Odd Down which would be handy.

Think you're right about monkton and prior park for ease of access though.

Lovely pub in combe hay too which isn't far from you.

And as you know Bath is lovely!

verylapsedrunner · 21/04/2009 14:09

Nothing like forward planning, just phoned Monkton pre prep and they have a space for Sep as does Paragon (read mixed reviews?). I guess I need to view the house first though .

Wellow is nice and has quite a close community. Primary school also seems quite nice. I'm not sure that the shop still opens - it used to be run by village people as a cooperative and I think they ran out of oomph - but I may be wrong.

From what I understand, it is quite a welcoming place but people are reasonably interested in each other (which I guess is not surprising for a small village).

I too have heard mixed things about the Paragon but have friends who rave about KES (which would be no harder to get to).

verylapsedrunner · 21/04/2009 14:18

KES would be my choice but has a waiting list, albeit of only one and these days anything can happen.

There's a lovely pub that sells fantastic beer (can't remember it's name but when I worked in Radstock a colleague and myself used to go on real field trips on Friday lunchtimes ). Which is fairly important as I'm sure you'll agree.

Oh and it's quite pretty round there.

Sorry can't tell you about trivial stuff like schools and the like...

OrmIrian · 21/04/2009 14:20

Sorry 'real ale field trips'.

OrmIrian · 21/04/2009 14:21

Also perhaps we could go running together and unlapse you I'm not far from there.

verylapsedrunner · 21/04/2009 14:22

A good pub is a definite bonus

Orm - I'd love to be unlapsed (on the running front that is) but my hips are objecting big time. Too many years of running and ignoring injuries me thinks.

I know of someone who ditched the Paragon in favour of All Hallows in Shepton Mallet (which would be easily accessible from Wellow) and never regreted the choice.

perma · 21/04/2009 15:28

I keep hearing lovely things about the Paragon since new Head came in (2 or 3 years ago now) - really good pastoral care, not sure about academically. It is now the feeder school for Prior Park. I can rave about KES - I have dd in Year 1 and ds in Year 3 and it is fantastic - only tricky thing is it is split site so Pre-Prep is in Weston and Juniors and Seniors in North Rd (but there is a minibus running from Pre-Prep to North Rd in mornings so I take both to Pre-Prep, dd goes into before school club for a bit (free as only there because ds is there for bus) and ds goes over on bus with his friends). I wouldn't worry about waiting lists - there is a lot of change through the year and people come and go because of job moves etc quite a lot.

perma · 21/04/2009 15:29

Nice pub in Combe Hay is The Wheatsheaf - v. near to Wellow, and I think Wellow pub is The Railway Inn?

littlerach · 21/04/2009 16:10

My friend lives v near the pub and i can't remember the name!
Is it the Stag's head?
Or is that Hinton Charterhouse? Or Midford?

Primary in Wellow is good.

Thanks everyone, lots of useful info.
