Help me find a vinyl floor that isn't trying to be a wood/stone/swirly floor. Please!

We have just redone our kitchen. It is a blissful haven of modern white units, white surfaces. white walls, white ceiling. I am 34 weeks pg - I need stuff to be white.

Plan is to put in a coloured glass splashback to tone down the surgical vibe.

We wanted to put in a block colour rubber floor, but budget won't stretch atm, so I need to find a vinyl/lino floor that is just a block colour (am thinking a darkish grey). Everything I've seen has swirls or is trying to be something it isn't (pretentious flooring)!

Any ideas oh wise ones?

Lastly, if you have a local John Lewis they have all the colours and samples to touch under the sun. Don't be put off by the frumpy swirls and borders, the basic product is truly fab!

Actually that marmoleum is really nice PoorLittleEgg.

Don't mind tiles as in, the product is laid in tiles, just don't want vinyl/lino that's trying to look like tiles IYKWIM.

I do like the fact that marmoleum is a natural product and obviously very hard wearing.

Hmmm - will have to bore discuss this with DH tonight.

He will be thrilled.

my work is done now

dalsouple. the french company. you don't have to have raised dots. can also be smooth.

orangina · 20/04/2009 11:43

here

And I have been in that kitchen! Full on, but quite nice....

NotSoRampantRabbit · 20/04/2009 11:44

frumpygrumpy you know you should really get yourself down to marmoleum HQ and get yourself a special badge and a hat and stuff.

Am being swayed by the marm.

They will send out samples. Be sure to get it laid by someone who knows what he/she is doing though. Best laid on floor with self levelling latex screed on it (can be put on marine ply).

NotSoRampantRabbit · 20/04/2009 11:46

Oh orangina that is the rubber floor I REALLY wanted (see first post) but DH has forbid me to spend any more money or we will be living on potatoes for the entirety of my maternity leave.

I love the dalsouple rubber thing.

One day it shall be mine....

I don't think it is hideously expensive is it? Couldn't you get it priced up and then see? As you have a lovely new kitchen, you shouldn't compromise on the floor (am I stirring things up a bit here?!)

frumpygrumpy · 20/04/2009 11:58

so true, I think I might.

Start a thread entitled "How Much Do You Love Your Marmoleum" and you will see there are loads of us out there. And I'm not the only one who could lie face down and sniff it all day

NotSoRampantRabbit · 20/04/2009 12:08

If I lay down to sniff a floor now, I would need to be winched back up with an industrial crane. I didn't realise it had added olfactory benefits!

Orangina, yes the compromise argument is the one I have been using, but I fear DH is immovable - and he has just spent rather a lot due to my insistence on expensive handles, lights, plug sockets, blinds and tiles! Have let my rubber floor go for now - but will resurrect the debate when we move into the country residence of my dreams.

Thank you all very much for your help. Am going to investigate StGeorge's vinyl and the marmoleum. Must have floor fitted before this baby makes an appearance!

Good luck, please let it be laid before that first contraction do let us know!

Have you tried www.colourflooring.co.uk for block coloured vinyl? Amazing colours with no awful patterns and textures.
