Move fridge and microwave into reception room. Cook huge batches of food and freeze. What are they doing that will take six weeks? That sounds like major work.

Well that sorts 3 days out of 40

We don't drive so even maccys isn't an option.

Its replace all cabinets and work surfaces, floor, rewallpaper, decorate and new boiler.

No alternative accom. Its the whole area being done street by street so would be impossible really!

you hvae to set up base camp in another room.

kettle, microwave , even a camping stove

if it is warm you can BBQ or cook outside

children cna have sandwiches for lunch, even microwave pasta , stuff like that

juice cartons can be drunk at room temp

get one of those little fridges maybe?

Sorrento · 19/04/2009 20:19

And for goodness sake empty everything out, I thought i could keep some little bits and pieces in there, you can't they get covered in dust.
It'll only take them a week once they actually arrive I bet.

wombleprincess · 19/04/2009 20:22

6 weeks?? is your kitchen the size of the QE2?

procrastinatingparent · 19/04/2009 20:24

You just have to fixate on how fabulous it will be when it is finished.

Take the easiest possible route at all times - admittedly sandwiches and cereal for 6 weeks is not a great diet but unlikely to cause long-term damage. Can you borrow a friends kitchen and cook some batches of food every now and again? Invite yourself round to friends for meals?

FAQinglovely · 19/04/2009 20:26

I bet it won't take long either once they come. I bet they've said available for 6 weeks because they're doing several in one go so have a six week time frame to do them all - so could theoretically turn up at any point during the 6 weeks to do it

IotasCat · 19/04/2009 20:27

Six weeks? It only takes twelve weeks to build a house !!

nancy75 · 19/04/2009 20:30

agree with faq, there is no way the council will pay workmen to spend 6 weeks in one house/flat, its probably a 6 week window that they could turn up anytime during the 6 weeks. i would have thought a week would be the absolute max it would take to do the work and would be surprised if it was that long.

lalalonglegs · 19/04/2009 20:37

Could be a case of starting the job, ripping out the current kitchen, leaving it a bombsite for five weeks and then getting on with job just before time runs out (if they're anything like most council contract workers ). It took us four months between first visit and signing off job for the council to fix a small leak on a flat roof in a flat we had where the council were the freeholders.

misdee · 19/04/2009 20:37

it took them a week to do my mums.

i wan ta new kitchen

iloveshoesandbags · 19/04/2009 20:51

I think they say 6 weeks because of the quantity that they are working on at any one time.
There probably won't be workmen in your house every day because they do things in stages. Plaster needs to dry and sometime the different trades do so many hours at a time.
I agree with setting up a "kitchen" in another area of your house.
A table for making sandwiches, microwave meals, etc. not the best but it is getting warmer. Can you go out with pic-nics to get away from the dust?
Are there any community centres nearby?
I would use all help from relatives and camp out at theirs.
You could make it quite exciting for the children by making it an adventure.
Any of your friends have a caravan for a short stay?
It will all be worth it in the end - I'm jealous.
