Could you sell a (2nd hand) immersion heater and loft tank? Builders have nicked it

Inspired by another thread , the other week the builders took out our immersion heater and the tank in the loft. All the rubbish goes in the hall (DH dumps it) but this was never there. The reasonable side of me thought they were nice and dumped it for us as it's big, but then I noticed much larger rubbish there. When DH asked they sheepishly said they stripped and scrapped it... (after DH said he wanted it back) - how much would it all fetch? If it's not alot I guess it's ok, but I think i'll be pissed off if it's alot as they took my leftover solid oak worktop too

My mechannic told me that 2nd hand scrap metal has gone up hugely in value in the last couple of years.

dh who is a boiler engineer and scraps stuff like that says about 25 quid

paolosgirl · 13/04/2009 20:57

This is theft, surely??

LadyOfWaffle · 13/04/2009 20:57

just seen some on ebay for £200... Ours was good & working

You mean it was in use? Inspired by the other thread, I would say call the police.

LadyOfWaffle · 13/04/2009 21:16

We replaced it with a combi, wasn't broken or anything. Police seems very strong, I just feel a mug. They knew we were struggling to afford this work (and they haven't collected their last days wages yet ) - last day they were here was the day DH asked about the boiler.

yes it's worth something, we scrapped ours and got cash.

oh dear.

LadyOfWaffle · 13/04/2009 21:24

How much did you get dragonbutter? I don't think I am fussed over £25, but if it's more like 200 I am going to be very pissed off. (and builderless). It looked quite newish, but expensive to run hence the combi boiler. Obviously all the copper piping aswell...

There's quite a market for scrap metal, even empty houses get broken into for it. I would be tempted to phone a scrap yard and ask what the going rate is to weigh a boiler in. Saying that i would prob have been tempted to go to the nearest scrap yards and see if it was still there. if it wa a good one they might try to flog it as it is.

nevergoogledragonbutter · 13/04/2009 21:59

i think we got about £70 but that included lots of pipes etc.

nevergoogledragonbutter · 13/04/2009 22:00

I made DH take it because i think we would have got less if i'd shown up with it in my school run dress

I think its standard for builders to do this sort of stuff, if you want to take it down the scrapyard yourself then you need to make this clear before they start the work. But technically I guess they shouldn't have done it without asking. You could tell them you want the money they got for it.

Pannacotta · 13/04/2009 22:06

OP why dont you ask the builders how much they got for it and agree that this figure will be deducted from their next payment?
Seems only fair....

LadyOfWaffle · 13/04/2009 22:17

I know they will fib. Oh well, lesson learned.

You could always try asking them individually and see what answers you get. Perhaps casually when giving them a cup of tea and biscuit, so they might feel too guilty to lie to you?
Worth a shot I reckon.
