Is it legal/safe to have a (boxed) gas and electricity meter in the bedroom?

Trying to re-jig our house and maybe move DS downstairs but there is an electricity meter and gas meter locked in a box up high in the corner. It's actually in the wall, but the doors and the frame are mounted on the wall. Anyway, can I have a bedroom there? I have a feeling I can't

No idea about legality, but why not?

A meter itself is not dangerous or anything is it?

We have and the surveyor said it is fine.
It is surprisingly common apparently.
The only downside is that when the guy comes to read the meter, you have to take him into the bedroom.

No, I don't think it's an issue. Gas/leccy meters no more dangerous than gas/leccy wires throughout the home.

But if you want a definite answer, I'd ring Building Control at your local council (people who do Building Regs) and ask them.

Yay, thankyou!

The only place you have to worry about them being is a room where there may be lots of moisture in the air.

We had one in the dressing room of our house which we converted to an ensuite - moved the meter into the hallway downstairs - was going to move it into DDs bedroom but the electrician pointed out that would be easier for the meter to be downstairs and not in a bedroom when it came time for it to be read.

Our gas and electric meters are both in DS1's bedroom and are checked every year by the rental people.

I believe it's fine, safe and legal!
