ARGH insurance job in bathroom - tiles fucked, not covered by insurance...advice?

We damaged some of our bathroom, including the bath. Insurance covered the cost of all the damage, and agreed, as we could not get matching bath, they would pay for half the rest of the bathroom suite. They also agreed that as the taps do not match the new suite, they would contribute 50% of this too.

contractor is here now, fitting it. He has found that the tiles behind the sink and toilet are cracked, or badly fitted. WIth the old suite, it was not noticeable. With the new suite in, they will notice.

We have found some tiles in the loft (bathroom installed before we moved in) which are the same, and he will tile the areas that are visible, but we will be charged for the labour of this.

Do you think we should expect the insurance company to pay 50%, the same as they have with everything else? We would not be replacing the suite if the bath was not damaged. If the bathroom suite was not replaced, the damaged tiles would never have been noticed. if we don't have the tiles replaced, it will look shit, and therefore out bathroom will not look at is did before the accident.

Is this acceptable? Before I argue with the insurance company about this.

lol how on EARTH did you cause so much damage in your bathroom?

They may ask for a report from your tiler

I would ask them first, let them know the additional cost, but probably not argue the toss too much

i set it on fire with a hanging lantern on valentines day. Burnt right through the window sill, and dripped into the bath, smoke damage on the wall and ceiling.

We could have just got a new bath. But it would have looked rubbish as it would not have matched. Its just one of those situations where it is going to spiral isn't it? He will replace the broken tiles, and then the ones left will look shit too...

GUFFAW

Yes you may be right about the costs - have the insurance company not sent their own 'team' around to do the work? I've always had workmen from their insurers, so when things have spiralled I haven't had to do anything, it all just gets paid and done

Oh and I apologise for the rude language in the title, very rude indeed to use such foul language for all to see

yes it is their team here. The bloke said tiling was not covered, so we would be billed for it.

oh bugger, he's probably right then. They are normally pretty lenient and helpful. Have you been making them tea and coffee?

it ended our romantic night, lets say, having the house on fire. I was terrified, and felt unable to drink the rest of our lovely bottle of Chablis . In reality, the damage is minor, but spread out, if that makes sense, a burn hole here, burn hole there. But the result is having £1600 worth of work done to get it looking as it did. We are paying £600 of it.

yes, and we have offered him a bacon butty and chocolate biscuits. He said he will try to sort it himself whatever that means?

Problem is, he has not been hard grafting for weeks and desperate for treat food. He has just got back from 2 weeks leave so probably not feeling generous. he did not want a bacon sarnie as he said he has come back to work to lose some weight after being fed like a king on holiday!!

Have you tried wearing a short skirt and gently flirting?

pavlovthepregnantcat · 31/03/2009 13:38

I am not the prettiest at the moment, what with morning sickness and all that. I am sure that would encourage him to help...

'well, Mr, you sure you don't want a bacon buttie...made it myself'

. Nah, can't see that working! DH has helped him get the new bath in, take the old bath out, ply him with tea. Might work...
