We are currently renting while waiting for our house to sell. Have seen a house we like do you think it is worth offering to rent if from them?

I I had someone who wanted to buy mine but they wanted to rent it first I would probably consider it. Would you or is this desperate madness

HMMM tricky

probably not

prices are likely to have dropped in 3-6 months and then you might be stuck with a house worth less money and sitting tenants

Heated · 28/03/2009 12:47

Why do they want to rent it first?

If you are thinking of renting it, I'd use a lettings agent because you are at the other end of the country now.

If you don't ask you don't get!
Worth a shot.

Sorry I have not made myself clear.

We have seen a house we quite like down here, mainly for garden and views. It has been on the market a while and it needs quite a bit of updating so i would imagine they have not got buyers hammering the door down.

We are renting here anyway so we were thinking of asking if we could rent it from them therefore covering there mortgage with a view to buying it in the future.

Our house up north is sat empty and we are renting down here in Dorset. The house we are interested in is near us out towards Dorchester. It is a bungalow though so a try before buy might be good as we have never lived in a bungalow.

Yes Lizzy you have said it so much better than me.

We have made it clear to our landlady that when we are in a position to buy we would like to buy the house we are in if it was realistically priced but as she does not need the money she is not willing to sell in this market so will not reduce her price or even put it back on the market.

Sorry, for getting the wrong end of the stick!

Tbh,I think ppl just like the idea of getting shot of the old place - having tenants is a tie.

Also don't they need the money to finance their own move?

Beetroot · 28/03/2009 12:55

god why not
If they ahve had no offers
It cannot harm, they know you are keen

DaisyMooSteiner · 28/03/2009 12:55

Someone I know has just done something similar and rented their house out to a family who will then apparently buy it from them at some point.

Worth a try - if house prices have fallen in 3-6 months time, then your house will be worth less but then so would the house you bought, so it might even be in your favour.

Beetroot · 28/03/2009 12:56

twinset why have you not rented your house up north out

noddyholder · 28/03/2009 13:00

Twinset that scenario us quite common in a downturn.I am thinking of doing it myself and it will put you in a good position as while you are renting the prices will prob keep falling for a few years and you could get a bargain

TheOldestCat · 28/03/2009 13:05

I'd give it a try, can't hurt. We are in the process of selling our flat, but if it falls through we would definitely consider renting it to someone with a view to them buying. But it sounds like we're in a different position to the vendor in your case as we have to move.

good luck.

twinsetandpearls · 28/03/2009 13:48

No Beetroot it was rented out to my sister who has basically ruined it and we have to decorate almost from top to bottom to fix it. It is really hard to get tenants as the market is flooded with house like mine, there are a few houses on my road that have been up for rent for ages.

Because if everything that has happened I would be very reluctant to rent ours out again and am reluctant to take it off the market when it seems things mnay be slowly picking up. But if someone wanted a 6 month contract only I may consider it.

Thanks for the advice.

As a word of warning, I would be very reluctant to let someone rent my house while it went down in value (as it is likely it will) and then sell it to them when the market has bottomed out. But, as others have said, it is worth asking.
