Has anybody ever knocked through a really old and really thick stone wall to create a doorway?

I'd love to make the window in our lounge into a doorway with double doors, which would mean the opening would need to be widened.

The walls are however several feet thick.

Does anyone know whetehr this is possible and how much it would cost?

You'd have to get a structural engineer in to look at the wall and tell you what would need to happen to make it possible, if at all

Thanks, how much does a structural engineer cost?

We did this in Italy on old stone house with walls at least a metre thick - it took the builder four days. Not a complicated job but f*ing hard work - can't tell you how much it cost because it was a few years ago and Italian rates would be different etc etc but it gives you an idea of what you are up against just in terms of labour bill.

Structural engineer quotes we got for recent (British job) to knock through a doorway in a supporting wall varied from £200 to £650. We took the £200 quote and he was fine - wall still standing with a door in it now.
