Ok so I get that a tiler does tiling, an electrician does electrics, a plumber does the plumbing but what about the other jobs?

Who move a window and door in an exterior wall and make another window in the exterior wall larger?

Who knocks down walls that might be supporting walls?

Is there somewhere I can look online for this sort of info?

Thanks! AM a first time buyer and don't have a clue

You want a general builder, tehy would probably do things like tiling as well, and if they are not able to do plumbing and electrics, they would have contacts.

NorbertDentressangle · 23/03/2009 13:32

You need a general builder. They can do all that and will bring in a structural engineer if they need advice or calculations done (for RSJs/lintels etc for load bearing walls etc)

Ok so just a general builder, I called one just now and he reckons I need a structural engineer?!

Is there an approved list of builder somewhere online?

General builder.

I can recommend someone if you're in Somerset

See if your local trading standards have an 'approved trademen' scheme. We have used those in the past, and it was really good

navyeyelasH · 23/03/2009 13:38

I'm in Bristol OrmIrian, is that too far?

If you are phoning round a few builders you will find that some will have structural engineers that they use and recommend.

OrmIrian · 23/03/2009 14:20

I shouldn't think so. Am I allowed to mention a name here or should I CAT you?

You would need a good general builder who would then make a decision whether to involve a structural engineer. It may be a quick phone call to confirm details or if a very difficult or awkward knock through it may involve a visit by structural engineer.
My DH is builder and I have a bad habit of thinking you can knockdown any walls (and moaning when you can't) His structural engineer is based in Cirencester which isn't too far from Bristol.
