Locks for metal windows? Help!!!

We have just moved into a new rented house and the windows in the LO's rooms have aluminium frames. DS1 has been opening them and as its three stories up I am now terrified of him falling out.

I've explained how dangerous it is b he's only 4 and won't really grasp the concept. I've wedged the window shut with an old bamboo blind but can't seem to find any locks which don't have to be screwed to the window frame.

I'm now not sleeping properly as every little noise makes me think he's at the window again. I also have to stand outside his bedroom door until he is asleep so he does't fiddle whilst I'm downstairs.

Starting to get seriously stressed about a seemingly little thing!

Can anyone help?

It's got a lock but it's so bloody old now it's really easy to undo!!

Dp is a glazier and he says you either need to change the hinges to restrictors which give you about a 2-3" opening latch or new key locking handles which he seems to think would be cheaper. Do your current handles not have any locks on them at all at the moment?

He can't believe there are no locks on them at all ... even for security sake - surely it is your landlord's responsibility to ensure the property is safe and secure?

Is the lock a key lock or a lock with an allen key?

actually, am thinking about it and I don't think you'll find anything that doesn't need to be screwed on, cos it just wouldn't be strong enough presumably?

have you looked into window screens?

tbh I think at 4 he is old enough to realise how dangerous it is if you explain it. my 4 yr old knows not to

It's more of a catch than a lock. Sort of twists round, so is secure from outside but really easy to open from inside. Looks like this only older

At wits end with DS have explained the danger so many times, even to the extent of dropping an egg on the floor for visual impact bt he'll still be there, worrying away at them.

are they sash windows then? sliding up and down? the lock you showed is normally for a wooden sash window ...

ToiletRollCover · 18/03/2009 21:17

They are sash windows.

You ideally need locking stays which drill into the frames ... but if you cant do that then how about wedging a piece of timber into either side of the frame from the bottom sash and the top of the recess - basically wedging the window so he cant slide it up!

Think I'll go with the wood wedges and talk to the landlord about fixing a proper lock on. Thanks very much for your advice!!
