Are they a good thing? Anything we should look out for? Would you recommend it in such a high-use area?

Don't see why they wouldn't work - although only experience is using them for a bathroom for our first house many years ago. As long as you seal them correctly and put on a really tough finish over then I'm sure they would work OK.

I think they can get dented with heavy legs on furniture and walking in heels unless you get the stuff that's specifically for kitchens and heavier domestic wear. They are warmer to walk on than ceramic tiles and don't show dirt up. My friend had some in her rented student flat, I don't personally like them though.

In the first flat I ever bought there was carpet in the kitchen which I whipped out and replaced with cork and it was great: warm, reasonably hard-wearing if you lay it and seal it properly and not too pricy. And if you drop a glasson it it won't smash to smithereens.

the stuff we had says suitable for hotel bathrooms

It's sealed km - you can just mop it like lino or whatever.
